Hello All,I'm starting to apply for my first nursing job as an RN and I was wondering what things you would suggest looking for in the job requirements, etc.
Thanks!
As a new graduate, you may find that your options are limited. I would suggest applying everywhere, seeing what actual offers you get, and then choosing the best from those offers. I wouldn't get anything very specific in mind until you're sure it's realistic for your job market and level of experience.
My sister-in-law who is a NP gave me excellent advice when I was looking for my first nursing job, heres what I remember:
Ask how long the typical orientation period is, and what happens if for some reason you need extra time.
ask about nurse/patient ratios
ask if there is mandated overtime, and how much notice you get
ask if they how many cancellations they have typically (remember YOU pay yourself for call-offs)
find out if the unit has a dedicated resource nurse or how trainings happen.
ask if there is any specialized training you need, such as cpi.
ask if you need any special equipment (most likely provided by facility but sometimes not)
ask if you will have education days or time where you can attend trainings, lectures, conferences, etc.
ask if everyone has charge nurse responsibility, and how it is assigned,
ask how floating works (speciality to speciality) or anywhere.
Best of luck!
