What is it like becoming a male nurse?

Did your friends make fun of you when you first said you wanted to be a nurse?Were the female nurses often supporting and helping you? What were your parents reaction? How did you overcome all the obsticles you had to undergo jus to advance towards your goal/dream into becoming a nurse?

I am a 15 year old male student in singapore who aspires to be a nurse.I would like to hear your views.Thank you.

The same amount of grief that I imagine Female Doctors or Paramedics get at first. This image of a certain profession being made for a certain gender has to stop, now! Once they see what kind of skills you have as a nurse they'll shut right up.

That said, the only real issue I had as a CNA was female residents who didn't want a male anywhere NEAR them. But that you can get past since there are plenty of other females on the floor. Don't know if a male RN runs into those same kind of issues.

There seem to be an abundance of male RN's in the ED, so I have never thought of there being any more difference in male and female nurses than I would male or female real estate agents.

If fact one night several years ago I was the only female on staff in the ED. The unit clerk, the tech, the 2 docs and the other 3 nurses were all male. We all had a good laugh about it when we realized it.

You'll be a huge let down to all those dirty old (and young men) the minute you enter their room and announce that you are their RN for the day. Male RNs have told me that this happens a lot. You might get a , or a (guess I'm not gonna get to flirt), or a . They find it funny.

As the average age of nurses is around 47, 48 years old; anyone expecting the hot 25 year old is likely to be disappointed.

Here in the big city, most folks seem completely unconcerned if their nurse has internal, or external, gonads. They just want to get out of there alive

If anything it worked to my advantage. But like what the above poster said, it all depends perhaps on cultural perceptions.

And btw my mates never made fun of me. They know for a fact that I'm smarter than them

When I got into school a few of my friends poked fun at my career aspirations, but humor cures all. I told them that being a nurse probably would suck, I'd be making 25-30$ an hour starting off and I'd have to work around beautiful intelligent women all day, not to mention the terrible job security, that shut most of them up. I found that the female nurses were actually more supportive of the men in my program than the women (women are typically very jealous of each other). My parents were stoked. Granted they've always been pretty liberal on all issues they were able to see past the stereotype, depends on the parents I guess. Overcoming the obstacles is all about perseverance. Just show up day after day, put in the work, and things will have a way of working out for you. Best of luck in your nursing dream.
