Usually any RN can insert an IV. I don't think there are specific rules. How good you are depends on how often you get to do it. As for drugs, there are rules regarding certain drugs. Usually chemo drugs require special training and training by two RNs. In my state, certain drugs such as propofol via IV push requires the MD or advance practice provider to push it.
I'm confused, you are a RN coming off orientation and you have not done any IV's? What about nursing school? And to give medications? You need an order to do that unless you become an advanced practice nurse (i.e. CRNA, DNP). You seem very puzzled about what is basic knowledge for a registered nurse, make sure if you are not ready to come off orientation you request more time.

Well, I assumed that "give" medications meant with an order. Even with an order, certain meds cannot be pushed by an RN in some states like the propofol example. Chemo drugs in my area require a chemo certified RN.
If you did not have IV therapy education, you may need to take a class. You may want to ask your board about it. They do have IV classes in my state for LPNs. Hospital training may be enough.
Your facility may require specific training or a class for IV insertion but the state does not. I had to take something during orientation and then do 3 sticks with a preceptor.
As far as IV med administration, chemotherapy and conscious sedation required special classes/certs. There may have been others but those were the only ones relevant to my floor so the only ones I took.

Do I need a certificate or license to insert and give Iv drugs? If I enroll in a class what do I need to look for to check if the class or trainer center is official?
I'm a new grad and I'm going to start my orientation soon, I got bothered by this thought.
Thanks!
