thing you have to do at work???

Mine-any dealing w/ illeostomy, colostomy, any of that...always makes me gag!

Oh my god! You guys are hillarious! Absolutely hillarious! You have me sitting here laughing uncontrollably. My friend comes into my room and says, "Are you alright, Mikey?" Hahaha! And I can't do anything but sit there and laugh. So he reads the post .. he just stands there looking at the computer screen and then back at me like, "Okay, what's to freakin' funny?" Yeah, so there ya have it .. heh.

Just reading these posts and stuff just excites me more and more. I am actually LEARNING tidbits of things through these posts, believe it or not. Yay! :)

One day once I've started working (as a CNA, but hey .. still working in the profession) .. I'll bring this post back to life and I'll post my reply of what I hate too, okay? :p

Specializes in MSICU and CCU.

I'm not a big fan of diabetic feet. Necrotic flesh and black toes just don't turn my crank.

Specializes in LTC, assisted living, med-surg, psych.

Anything to do with the mouth and/or teeth.......bleeccchh! And glass eyes......I've been known to bribe other nurses with exchanges of duties ("I'll suction 226's trach if you'll take out 210's glass eye and clean it"). Eeewwww. I can handle the gnarliest wounds, the GI bleeds, even the infamous staph-infested tracheostomies that smell like my sons' dirty socks, but pleeeeeeeeeeeease don't make me deal with dentures or prosthetic eyes!!

Bowel disimpaction done in the home.

I'm so over it. Been in home care for many years and have done so many digital fecal disimpactions that I just don't wan't to do any more.

Its funny you mention disempactions, I rarely have to do one but the other night one of my patients said "its right there at the back door I just can't get it out" , mind you this is 5 minutes before report for shift change (it always is lol). Being a male with somewhat large fingers I'm not usually asked to do it, but she was my patient and there was no way I could shirk off this duty to another nurse or the oncoming shift... I was in there for thirty minutes, and let me tell you its amazing how much feces the human body can put out...I finally finished after filling up the fourth chuck .. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

oral/tracheal suctioning and anything having to do with sputum.

personally, nothing grosses me out. I've had a liver and kidney transplant and had a temporary illeostomy for 3 months. I think it's kinda hurtful when people say they don't like to be around or do certain things. Think about the patient and how they feel. I am only speaking from personal experience which has enlighted my attitude to be a caring nurse.

I do my utmost NEVER to show the patient any revulsion on my part.....that would be highly unprofessional, to say the least. It's only when the distasteful task is done and I've left the room that I give vent to my "urkies", usually in the form of a sour face and a vivid description to my co-workers in the break room!:D

I hate anything dealing with POOP. All the other gross stuff I can totally handle.

Constipation.

Old people obscessing about their bowels is the WORST. People coming into the ER to get enemas is 200 Xs worse than suctioning goobers, cleaning ostomies, or anything.

On a lighter note:

There's three basic rules to being a ER nurse.

#1. Never let a patient get between you and the door.

#2. Gets a REAL LONG stethoscope so's you aint gotta stand real close to 'em.

#3. If its REALLY REALLY gross, slap a bandage on it and let the doc deal with it. THATS why he gets the big bucks.

rjbryan,

I like your style. lol

I would have to say that one of the things I least like to do is...

Smell post-op breath! With the combination of not eating for hours on end and having anesthetic go through your system...it smells the same all the time and it's gross every single time....ugh...:imbar
