So I’m attending the RN program 4 days a week and I’m almost done with one of my classes so I will only be attending school 3 days a week. I’m trying to see what jobs would be suitable in terms of flexibility and it seems like staffing agencies are the only places that will work with my schedule. I’m currently working in a pediatric hospital as a MA/Receptionist (part time but dropping down to per diem soon) and I’m seeing LPN positions that I can’t accept mainly because of the scheduling conflict. My hospital uses LPNs in the clinic portion but I’m thinking of just getting another position elsewhere in the meantime. There is another hospital next to me that is surging with LPN positions on the floors which I find odd but I’m not crazy about working in a hospital at all. I just want something flexible (either part time or preferably per diem) that will allow me to work when I want. Any suggestions?
If you don't mind leaving your current hospital, maybe you should look into pediatric home health. That's what I'm currently doing and I LOVE the flexibility in the hours I choose to work and the cases I want to work. I'm not sure if this is the case with all home health agencies though (patient assignments).
I'll be in your shoes next May- starting the LVN to RN program at my local community college. Once I start school, I plan to go down to part-time status. I chose this route because I did not want to commit to a Monday-Friday, 8-5 clinic position that will eventually conflict with my classes.
Good luck!
While I was working on my LPN I was a float pool tech at a hospital and I was PRN, it worked out amazing!! We had to do 6 shifts in a 6 week period, but we self scheduled so I could spread those shifts out however I wanted. On breaks I would cluster my shifts so I had less to do when I was back in school, but you can ALWAYS pick up extra shifts if needed (& usually for urgent pay $$). I plan on switching to PRN again when I return to do my BSN next fall.
