What kind of first aid kit do you have?

Published

I thought this would be an interesting topic, it seems that for most health care individuals there are 2 kinds of first aid kits.

1. beautifully stocked with bandaids of everysize and all sorts of creams and everything else that anyone can imagine under the sun

2. gauze and Tape

I personally am the gauze and tape kind, if it is big enough to be of importance then gauze and tape will do until we can make it to the emergency room. Also a pad throun in because they are clean and absorband and can go over the sterile gauze to help soak up blood and apply pressure.

Alot of my friends are often amazed that I don't carry every first aid product there ever was made.

So just curious what type do you have?

Uh.... none? Or do the bandaids and Maalox that I always carry in my car count?

But then I'm still just a lowly nursing student. :chuckle

I use an old candy can (Thank you for those Elvis chocolate cans). I just checked -- 6 tattoo bandaids, half a tube of polysporin, one packet of small steristrips, three rolls of paper type tape, gauze 2x2's, some outdated kids tylenol, and a mefilm.

Ashamed, yup, Mother of teenaged boys who lift any bandaids I buy and stick them on hangnails...

I carry a fully stocked jump bag. :)

Hey you first aid kit carriers....where's your pocket mask for cpr?!

That's one of my biggest fears....being faced with a situation where mouth to mouth might be required and no protection! It happen to a friend of mine last summer and ever since then, my little keychain mask is carried neatly (along with a pair of gloves that I change out q month or so) in my purse.

I have a nice emergency kit for my car. Gave each of my family members one for christmas a couple of years ago.

I live in earthquake country and after our large quake in 1989 I learned what it meant to be prepared to be on your own for a while without readily accessible 911 services, and I've tried to be prepared ever since.

My first aid kit is one my son gave me a couple of cars ago :) . This thread makes me realize I should go through it and check for outdated stuff. It also has jumper cables and a flashlight (I do check the batteries now and then) :chuckle

At home, I don't have a kit per say-I have an assortment of band-aids, guaze, tegaderms, tape, antibiotic ointments, hydrocortisone.

In my car, I have a first aid kit that has band-aids, guaze, tape, scissors, a bulb syringe and I do have a CPR face mask. I keep one in my hubby's truck as well.

I do need to check both first aid kits in our vehicles.

The last place I worked handed out first aide kits to the nursing staff last year. For what reason I don't know. They may have been some part of a promotion package with Johnson and Johnson since they use to buy alot of stuff from them. It was a pretty decent one too. Bandages, tape, scissors, tweezers, ointments for cuts and burns, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, ASA, gloves, uh... let's just say it was loaded all inside a tin case. I also keep a CPR mask in my truck.

I keep meaning to get a plastic container to put my blanket, my flashlight, a knife to cut open a seat (for the foam insulation, just in case I'm in the middle of no where and have to wait a LONG LONG time) and some water and crackers in my truck as well. Mostly because I don't wanna be caught in a bliazzard with nothing while I wait for help. :D

Call me overcautious, but I'm not gonna die freezing :lol2: You never know. ;)

Uh, what is the foam for?

I'm very prepared- I ALWAYS have a couple of machine washed bandaids and 2x2's in my scrub pocket. If I am at home, I can usually find a few in the dryer too...

I have a fully stocked jump kit, splints, ice packs, sterie-strips, mask, b/p cuff, stethoscope, and various and sundry bandages, and tape.

I've actually seen a few MVA's and the first time all I had was gloves. Next one, I ended up digging my way into a rollover van+travel trailer on the expressway. And, yes I checked very carefully to be sure it was safe before I entered the vehicle. Fortunately one of the occupants chose the seat belt, his wife didn't, and had her behind dragged across the roadway for at least 100' while it was sticking out thru the shattered passenger window. Was stuck there until Fire/Rescue got there and cut out the windshield. They were lucky, she lost quite a bit of shall I say, her pride, but lived.

Since that one, I won't go anywhere without at least my mask, some gloves and some 4x4's
