Hi, about to graduate and was wondering what would be some employment ideas for a male nurse other than being a bedside nurse on a medsurg floor at the hospital? Thank you to all who respond... :)

Wow, what Esme said confirms what I feared since the 1980s when I saw everyone (female) that I knew go into nursing.
To contribute to the original question, I have worked for home health care and hospital equipment companies (Apria and KCI the bed company) and the men in the clinical/sales positions there had considerably more success because the (female) nurses at the hospitals seemed to relate better to them, strangely enough! It was as if the staff (AKA the customers) felt some competetion with our female sales/clinical people. Not to mention the direct quote told to me by a nurse on why they were so nice to us guys and so mean to the females from our company: "we work here all day and the only men we see are gay or doctors, when we get to see a'normal' guy it's a treat" NOT MY WORDS, OK? - so flame suit on - that's just submitted as explanation for the unususl behavior of some staff at some hospitals.
So to surmise, you may have a future in sales or clinical consultation for a DME company.

Do I think the "shortage will return....yes, it will eventually.....If the economy improves and people return to their "real jobs" and they can leave because they are sick of the treatment of nursing by administrations because this road is NOT paved with gold....and it includes weekends and holidays. If not the...... probably about 2020 when old bats like me will have no choice but to retire because we physically will not be able to do the job any more.....many of these new grads will have moved on.

There are also government positions. I know an RN that runs the local health and safety office for the Corp of Engineers. Not much actual work involved most days.

I'm interested in why you think that there would be different opportunities for males - LOL. But - I do know of a couple. . . The French Foreign Legion (yeah, it really exists) nursing jobs are only open to men. Seriously, check it out - French Foreign Legion - Recruiting. And there are Nursing jobs in male-only religious orders. Is this the kind of thing you are after?

I just read through all the posts wow! I am headed into my last semester of school (my wife and I both), and am getting anxious about jobs. I hope to get a job in the psychiatric field. Would love to work correctional nursing in a youth or adult facility! Being a larger male and interested in psych I hope this is the field for me. It all depends what you are interested in. The only barriers in nursing are the ones you set!

Well...first of all....there is NO shortage. So..... today were have new graduates being churned out every 6 months...many unable to find work. The average job hunt lasting almost 15-18 months. CA has a 47% unemployment rate of new nursing grads. Hospitals refusing to orient new grads mainly because it is expensive and they don't have to. Hospitals don't need new grads....they have all the nurses they need..they are lacking experience in some critical care areas...yet they will not hire the experienced nurse....yes ageism exists in nursing.

That 47% number makes me happy because, like most of us here we are the 53% that get hired anyways

Seriously, man, while I'm all for tenacity and can-do attitudes, wait until you've been in the game for a few innings...
