I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.
I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???
Thanks for your input!
thanx soooo very much for all of this so very helpful information. this is a God sent. I am starting clinicals spr 07 and i can't wait!!!! I need to know where a student who has defaulted loans can get financial assistance. this is very hard trying to pay for out of pocket!!!!!!!!!!
Have you tried to get reinstated? I believe sometimes, if you can get reinstated, you can still qualify for financial aid after a few months of on-time payments.
hi fun2care,:) i have really enjoyed all of your informative and extremely helpful input on this tread. 2 answer your question, i am currently unemployed and tried to make payment arrangements based on an income contingency. my total income is only 1,000/mo and that's child support. and based on that the worksheet states that i didn't have enough income to even quailfy for the program. i just recently applied for a consolidation loan thru a company called student loan solutions. i am praying that they are able to help. however, my tuition is due by 01-04-2007. i need books and all the other things that are required. so if anyone out there knows of anywhere i can get assistance please let me know. thanx!!!!!!
I completely understand.

My mom is getting me a PDA for Christmas but I don't know what kind to tell her to get. I need it to be compatible with a MAC computer. Also, what software would you reccommend and where should I buy it? This Thread it so helpful!! Thanks!!
I also heard that it is good to carry around a Vicks Vapor Rub stick if you have trouble with the clinical smells at first!!
Any PDA will do (Palm or MS operating system.) What you NEED is ePocrates software for a drug reference. Epocrates, home of the world's most widely used mobile medical references It's FREE and it rocks!
One thing I am so glad I got is a digital voice recorder to record the lectures. Then I transfer them to I-tunes and put them all on my MP3 player (I saw one that actually records in MP3 format for $129). That way I can actually walk on the treadmill or around my neighborhood and study at the same time! The best thing is that when you listen to the lectures again, you miss those little things that always seem to pop up on the test.

That's a REALLY good idea!!!
Im from Australia, so its different, but here is my 5c (im expensive )
I used different coloured folders and things as codes... so pink was for nursing context classes (theory classes) and a pink sticker on the spine of a textbook meant it was for that class (helped when running late or tired). I had a folder (for handouts/lecture printouts), a notebook holder, all in the same colour. I had green for anatomy and physiology classes, and purple for professional issues classes.
I had a digital recorder for lectures. Very useful if friends were off sick, if not feeling well (I have a chronic illness so it was more of a potential, i was usually well), or wanting to clarify. There was actually a mix up about when a exam paper was due, and i had the recording of the lecture clarifying that it was due on the monday rather than the friday, however the nursing school hadnt been made aware, so when i rang on fri to see what time they closed (cos i had it done but was working) they told me it was due by 5pm (giving me 1 hr to travel across town), however the recording said monday so i was safe (well my friends that hadnt done it were more safe, i got it in by 5pm but my gfs were worried thinking theres wouldnt be accepted). Back to the recorder... i copied them to CD (the human anatomy and physiology ones anyway) so i can go over things again as i need to know it.
I got a laptop, as my comp was a bit unreliable and cos i dont stay at home much it was much easier being able to study on the go. Im considering a PDA for next year, but i will wait and see. I need to save more money.
A good diary is essential i think. I got a teeny small one, week to an opening, and wrote shift times, assignments due, and put assignment nearly due in the week before so i wouldnt turn the page and be suprised. Its also handy to keep in my bag to put in parties or events.
When working, lots of reliable pens. We all know it - they will be stolen, so have several, it saves stress trying to chase the person down to get ya pen back.
Nametag for the stethoscope - it works. Mines a rare green colour so it stands out, but having the name means you can say yes thats mine. A few nice docs have 'borrowed' mine.
Lastly, i think friends and family are important. Dont block them out, cos your too busy, but let them know when it will be over (ie, cant talk this week cos i have a test, but in 2 weeks time my assignments will be over so we can do lunch and catch up). Its better than telling them your too busy without making plans.
Good luck to everyone. This website is fantastic.
A positive attitude, ability to listen and not judge. A desire to learn with the realization that you will see experienced nurses that are wonderful and some that aren't, and hopefully you will know the difference and choose to be one of the good ones. You must be willing to put all your hobbies aside until you are finished with school. It is a demanding schedule but a very worthwhile one. Good luck.
