I was working a night shift on a tele floor as a new Nurse.
We had this one poor old lady who was confused and was restrained as usual for her safety. She was our designated resident nightmare geri from hell, so she was placed near the Nurse's station.
So we are chilling out at the Nurse's station, chatting and trying to get through another night...
Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I see our lady in question standing in the dimly lit doorway of her room!
I instantly leap out and run to her. As I approach her, she appears to be falling towards me, so I meet her in a bear hug...my arms around her waste, and her arms around my shoulders.
As I catch the lady, I notice a very strong smell of feces, and I feel something warm on my hands, arms and shoulders...
My fellow heroes come in behind me, and as the lights are turned on, my worst fears are instantly realized.
Yes, I caught the poor old lady with a good old bear hung football catch, but I was also covered in the lady's feces.
As I look at her, she has feces smeared all over her arms and hands... (and even her face!)

This was back when I was an active EMT. We arrived at a house where the caregiver told us the patient had died, but there was no DNR posted at the head of the individual's bed which meant we had to start CPR. We had no bag valve mask resuscitator at the time so we used mouth-to-mouth.
The patient was being tube fed, and had cancer. Tumors dislodged as we were performing compressions, and the foulest smelling odor I had ever smelled emitted from the patient both in the home and in the ambulance. I was forced to leave as soon as we arrived back to the station, otherwise I would have thrown up. I can still remember that smell twenty years later.

Today I learned not to try to medicate a patient outside while it is jumping up and down in a puddle of its own urine. A big dog can splash that stuff right in your face.
Still not as bad as the time I tried to clean a broken kennel drain full of sewage with a high-power hose. Sometimes I feel like such a dufus.

It's not nice to refer to patients as dogs and patient rooms as kennels.

Why were you medicating a patient outside & letting them jump up & down in their urine.
She was outside with her kennel-mate and I thought I could save time by doing it out there before I brought them back inside. They often split up and run in different directions when you have two of them together.
