I'm currently doing my final placement on an inpatient trauma unit. I will have been there for 2 months full time by the end of it. I have an amazing preceptor and have learned so much. I love this unit, I already feel integrated into the unit and feel like part of the team. In short, I want to work here. My preceptor's last two students were hired onto the unit and apparently the nurse manager hires a lot of students who did their placements there. The unit is always short and almost everyone has told me that I shouldn't have a problem getting hired.
My preceptor says I need to either meet with the nurse manager in person or send her an email essentially asking for a job. The last student who got hired told me she emailed her and got accepted right away without an interview. Would you recommend an email or in person? What do I say? I am driving myself crazy thinking about this as the manager is nice...but she is extremely busy and not very personable (meaning she is pleasant to you but her busy-ness shows). I am going insane as I am loving this unit and feel like part of the team so much that I feel like I will be crushed if I don't end up working there.
I know I need to prepare myself for the possibility that she won't have a position available, or that it wont' work out. But are there any tips on how I should approach her about this?
Thanks very much

Both if possible. The face-to-face shows sincere interest, but the properly-worded email will be a documented form of contact.

A quick word to her in the hall, not a big conversation. "Hi, I just wanted you to know that Preceptor RN is encouraging me to apply here and I'm going to be putting in an application to HR. Would you like me to email you?"

I would send an email asking for an official, in person meeting. That way, she can schedule it around her busy schedule.
Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up sending her an email briefly explaining my request and asking to meet in person because I'm on nights for 2 weeks and won't see her. i hope it works out. thanks again!
