I am a brand new med surg tenet nurse. What do I need to know when I walk in the door.

I get one week of orientation.

Am learning the following:

iv,

wound care

when to change lines

central line care

endings of medications

how to give report and take report.

Is there any info I need to carry on my mp3 player and have handy?

Do I need to review anything for orientation?

Thank You for the help.

One week of orientation for someone who has never worked as a nurse? I'd learn real quick how to run from such a facility and not look back. Any facility worth working for will provide an adequate orientation. One week is not adequate.

Is there a place where I can look up the facility. Was wondering how others have done as a new nurse at a tenet hospital on a med surg floor.

What kind of training should I look for a new nurse? I am concerned as where I live hospital jobs especially med surg are hard to get, but being safe is most important.

What is a tenet nurse? Just curious.

Where I live "tenet" is the name of the company that owns the hospital. We have "tenet" and "hca" hospitals.

Capitalizing 'Tenet' would've reduced the confusion :^) ... but I see people forgetting to do that all the time, so I'm not picking on you.

But like a few others have said, if that's really true - a 1-wk. orientation for med-surg - I think that's beyond crazy. That's about what I got at my LTC/Rehab facility, and even though the average level of care per patient is less there, that was kind of ridiculously low too.

I will be given one week hospital orientation and two week floor orientation with the ability to ask questions whenever I have them. I am new to med surg, but have in home health nurse which consists mostly of assessments, wound care, trach care, iv antibiotics and patient education. I am concerned as I was considered an experienced nurse since I take care of home health med surg patients. Is that sufficient experience, the hospital is one that is truly great and people friendly; something that is extremely important to me.

How could I offset my lack of experience? Has anyone completed a med surg cert? or something else to give me the extra support I would need as a new med surg nurse? Is there any online support for new nurses that I could take advantage of to help me through the initial learning curve?

I would ask for the option of extending your floor orientation if needed. :)

I think your big learning curve is actually going to be on time management.....something that you cant really memorize ahead of time or keep notes in your pocket for. Its just going to have to be something you work hard on mastering.

I think you need to know that one week of orientation is setting you up for failure. Truly.
