I am currently at Nassau Community College. I was working towards my pre-reqs for nursing. I only have one class left. I applied for the fall semester and was rejected. Since I only have one more pre-req and I really need to get going on getting some sort of degree should I continue working towards the liberal arts degree? My biggest fear is not getting accepted and I am stuck. I attended SUNY Old Westbury and have a bunch of credits from there but nothing appeals to me. The credits from Old Westbury do not really go towards a specific major since I was always changing my major. I just feel like I have wasted so much time and I finally decide what I want to do and now I cannot get into the program. My choices are pretty limited due to financial restraints.
Sometimes I just want to give it all up and try to find a decent paying job so I can support myself. That would be just settling and I have done that my whole life. I plan on staying at NCC for at least another year and if I do not get in I will have to rethink my future goals.
Enough rambling - my main question is: Should I work towards the liberal arts degree so maybe I can at least get a liberal arts degree and then go on from there?
Thanks

hey tracy i am in the same boat..i got rejected myself..right now i am rethinking what i should do...but if you love nursing i would do a CNA course which cost 500-600$...and then use that to get a job dealing with nursing..get your foot into the door..while working..just keep applying..and maybe the placew where you work will pay for your RN...and they will work with your schedule..thats what i will end up doing...but i know whar your feeling...i am so confused of what path i should take in my life..i even started to take a lot of city exams also..cross my finger that i get accepted also in that..but i feel like i am just waisting time ,while there might be a job out there for me that pays well also and less stressful

Good luck with the city exams. I have a county job right now but the pay stinks. I cannot live on my own with my pay. I want to be a nurse first and above to help people and make a difference in their lives but I also want to make a decent salary so I can support myself.
In my experience with county jobs - if you do not like to work this is the job for you. I have been at my current job for 18 years and I hate it. You get paid the same as someone who does nothing while you do all the work. I know you can find that anywhere but in the future I am going to stay away from any civil service jobs.
What types of civil service exams are you looking into?
oh..i did the postal, court officer, enviromental police, sanitation enforcement....to be honest i want a good paying job...but my dreams was always to become a RN..just the process of becomming a RN makes me frustrated...makes you want to do something else..

What about applying in the Spring... to both NCC and Farmingdale?
if you do really well on the NLN exam, then you should be able to get into Farmingdale.
Neeniebean: Do you go to Farmingdale? If so, how is it.
I'm going there in the Fall... haven't started yet. I am curious to hear feedback about the program as well. So far, i only know one person who's mother went through the program and loved it. But, that's not 'real' feedback.
But so far, in the dealings that i've had with the nursing department (though, not many) they were a million times more pleasant than the nursing dept. at NCC. So, i'm hoping that that's a slight insight into how they run the program.

Hi,
As an alternative, have you consider LPN programs. I hear it's easlier to get accepted into a LPN program compares to a RN program. I have a friend that applied to a RN program for 3+ years and repeatly rejected so finally she applied to LPN schools and she was accepted immediately. Plus, the LPN program is so short that she will graduate this August (only 12 months). Overall, I think it's better than waiting and have your time wasted for nothing.
Good luck!
any good LPN schools in new york?

If you really just want to get into a program. Long Island University- Brooklyn Campus accepts practically anyone BUT their program stinks... In the long run it's up to you to do good and pretty much make yourself pass the NCLEX. I went there as a last resort but while I was there I applied to NCC and since I got in I'm definitely getting out of LIU- Brooklyn as fast as I can! But it's always a thought, as a last resort if you just want to get into a nursing program. The problem is that it is VERY expensive so it's kind of like you are paying to get into a sucky program.
I think the idea about becoming an LPN is a really good idea. I was going to do that if I didn't get into Nassau. Then you can work in a hospital and they will probably pay for you to become an RN... and maybe it is easier to get into a program once your an LPN. Good luck with whatever decision you make! Don't give up! Where there's a will, there's a way.

I have to say I made it this January and ITS NO JOKE! Of course I was so excited to get in and I felt like a big shot! Well now I have dwindled into nothing haha! I recommend not having a job! It is too stressful.. You WILL give your self a heart attack! oh yeah AND GO OVER YOUR MATH SKILLS. I am 28 and I have only taken 2 math courses at NCC.. both with calculator use! Well in the nursing program you DONT get to use a calculator! So on my first practice math nursing test I FAILED!! oh yeah AND YOU CAN NEVER BE ABSENT! Any other questions feel free to send them over!

I am a NCC graduate from the nursing dept. It is a VERY hard program. My husband will attest to the nights I was up, working on my careplans, at 5 am, crying because the printer stopped working!!!! AHHH the memories. It is a hard program, but rewarding, and I did it!! Keep on working for it and you'll get in it is a great education, for an EXCELLENT price, hence why everyone wants to get in. I was one of over 1000 applicants, and 150 acceptants.
I suggest applying to NCC again, as soon as you can, but if you need to bring your GPA up, take some "easy" courses in the meantime, that might apply to your bachelors. (Intro to Stats., Chem., etc.) But also don't put all your eggs in one basket, apply to other schools.
NEVER BE ABSENT! DON'T PROCRASTINATE (like me)! AIRWAY BREATHING CIRCULATION! PT. SAFETY!
