What if I fail again?

Published

I am so scared about retaking the TEAS Friday. I failed three sections last Monday, Science and Math included. All I have talked about for the past month is starting nursing school in the fall. I am terrified I won't pass on Friday and will look like a fool and loser. I ahve spent a small fortune of books, online practice tests, tutoring, and enrollment fees. I have had my hopes up for so long. What if I fail again? (Fail the test, and fail at venture)

When I went last Monday to take the test, I was sure I had passed all the parts, then to find I had only passed one was such a let down. I cried for hours. I haven't even picked up a book to study the parts I missed. I'm scared I will get back in there and forget all the parts I passed the first time.

I am currently a student with University of Phoenix in the AA for Elementary Education program. I have 5 classes left after my current class until I earn my AA. If I fail the TEAS again, should I finish up these classes? Where I live, just having an AA doesn't really help in that field, you have to have a BA.

I don't understand why this has to be so damn difficult. The TEAS is supposed to test general knowledge, but how many people know how to graph an equation or what an ionic bond actually is? I figure there will be enough stress during the difficult classes. What is the point of causing extra stress before we even start?

I'm not trying to whine, just letting some steam out. However, I am open to any kind of encouragement.

Way to go on being so close to completeing your AA. As far as not passing on Monday you really don't have any other option than putting your head down, nose to book, and study all of the review information. Beyond that I would absolutely complete your AA (you are so close) and enroll in your local CC. Without some more solid math and science knowledge I am concerned you will feel far behind your peers in nursing school. Best of luck.

GirlDotson,

This must be a very difficult time for you. I know you mentioned having a lot of study guides. It would help if you could really assess how you distribute your study time from what you already know to those you are unsure of.

As for some of the problems you have in math, much practice will be required. But here are a few tips for graphing an equation. And I mention this, only to help you see pattern to solidify the material.

Suppose your equation is 2x + 3y = 18

Don't panic! Here you draw on what you already know, and that is to send x terms to the other side.

You are left with: 3y = -2x +18 (good so far?)

You now want y to be alone; you divide both sides by 3:

y = -2/3 *x + 6 ( I put the asterix to denote x is not in the denominator when you multiply)

Make a table (eventually, you'll be able to do this mentally). Choose any # for x (start small! :) ) and see what the result for y is.

Say I picked 3 for x. Two ways, the 3s cancel leaving you with -2 + 6 = 4 OR 3*-2 = -6 >>>> divide -6/3 to get -2 >>>> add -2 + 6 = 4.

Good so far? So y = 4 when you replace x with 3. So your coordinate on the graph is (x, y) or in this case: (3, 4).

On your graph (Cartesian coordinate), simply count 3 on the x direction (horizontal line to the right since 3 is positive) and up 4. From this point on, any point you pick should align with 4 to get a straing slanted line.

There are dosage problems too you say! Different thought process but certainly sound reasoning helps. For more on this, in response to another poster, I postedA logical response to solve such problems.

Dosage Calculation

I agree with other posters that a CC route is much beneficial. I started there a few years ago when I needed to brush up on my math. I wish you much success and post whatever math, science questions you may have. I'm no expert, but if I happen to catch them, I'd love to help.

I will be praying for you! I am going to be taking an exam soon too and Im super nervous about failing because Im not good at math and science on tests.. Im good at it in general, but on tests its so hard!

This might be late, but Im going to recommend a book, for the math. Its called "Math for Nurses" by Kaplan. I am doing one chapter a day, and it literally starts from the very very beginning with math and has good explanations. If you can, get a hold of it. Also, Im a Christian, and it helps when I pray before I study, I know that oftentimes I can get distracted and I need the Lord to give me wisdom and guidance and patience....

He can help in studying as well as every part of our lives!.

Please dont lose hope my friend, remember,

Proverbs 24:16~The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.

God Bless you!

Let us break it down somewhat: if you are motivated about your studies, this will often breed success. Sadly, competitive schools will see a failure (or withdrawals) just two times in the same course on transcripts and this is ground for dismissal or a seat not extended to you. We don't have the luxury to fail seven times.

But yes, we make a lot of mistakes in life and we can't always feel sorry for ourselves but to pick up from where we left off. Where other people are concerned, we don't have that option. Above is just one calculation pattern to solve problems on the TEAS exam, which in my humble opinion, is much more important approach this exam. Now, if prayer helps, by all mean. However, rigorous study is more a determining factor.

Humility should be inherent of all human beings and not just for Christians. But given my answer, you might call me a bad person already. To which I'd reply, I'm glad it works for you.

I don't think you are a bad person, I do think you have a chip on your shoulder. The verse was not meant literally to fall seven times, but that even though we may fall over and over again, we do get back up, that is, unless we do not have true intentions. It was meant as encouragement, not as a literal saying. Sheesh. I am ever more thankful to the op for supplying words of encouragement than to someone just wanting to knowck them down.

Whoa! I apologize if I came across that way. That was not my intention.

Nowadays, it is tough to speak the truth on the merits. We sugarcoat things so much that we fail to do the hard and necessary work. I have known many people in my short life who otherwise leave it to the Creator to create miracles when the going gets tough. This is a very subjective thing, mind you.

Of course to "fall seven times" is not literally taken out of context. But how many times are we allowed to fall where academics is concerned? What exactly is this passage supposed to mean?

Try explaining this on your school application. Furthermore, why are you even worried for Friday's exam. It's under a divine control right? Many Christians make it seems they are the only people with humility, and refer to scriptures for help with ongoing problems. The last part is okay if they help you, but certainly not everything.

After your exam on Friday, I enlighten you to read: The perimeter of ignorance

I made a comment on the merit and I was not talking down on anyone. You find that providing a proverb is much more motivational than the math steps I showed you above, than fine with me. Whatever works for you. I did not mean to hijack your post and I should have not contributed at all.

You didn't hijack the post. As far as relying od divine help, "God helps those who help themselves". True, you cannot sit and wait around for God to come in and make it all good. You have to work for it. And, as far as the test on Friday, for many people, praying before a stresful situation is very helpful in calming the mind. For me, my pray is and has always been, "Dear Lord, Youknow what "I" want here, what my heart wants. I ask that you give me the stregth, knowledge, and will power to do my best. If your plans for me are different, that is fine, but I pray that you whatever the outcome, I am able to appreciate the outcome. P.S. I REALLY want this, if that helps."

And, when a person refers to a verse or peice of scripture, it is for encouragement. Perhaps those words helped that person before. Soem take it with a grain of salt, while others take it to heart.

Decided not to take the TEAS again Friday. I am really worried about failing again, and loosing that money just to have to wait until next summer to start classes anywy. So, I requested a refund for my application/registration fee and enrolled in my local cc. Classes start in August, so I will have the summer to chill. I feel so much better about this decision!

Thank you all for your comments!

I think you made a very wise decision... Good Luck and God Bless :)

Congrats on your decision! I'm sure it was not an easy one. If you have a science, math question at a time that is inconvenient to ask in school, post here! Heck, we'll learn together!

Cheers!

Good luck with the test! I have to take a TEAS test also to even get accepted into the program. I am still on my pre reqs though. I am really suprised to hear a lot of people saying their programs didnt require any anat or physio or chem! My program requires anat, physio, micro, and chem as a pre req for physio! I am stuck on chem! I know how you feel. I totally feel like Ill never get into nursing either since I cannot seem to pass chem! I just keep studying and since my heart is in nursing, I will not give up! Same for you. If you know this is where your heart belongs, get to studying. Make sure you know of good study habits. Dont spend a lot of time studying at once. Youll never remember anything. Take breaks. Make flash cards if you have to. So again, good luck.

If you passed high school, you should pass the TEAS exam.
