I'm curious - I recently had a patient hit 106.6 - it was the highest I've seen in my long career...what have you seen?

My daughter when she was 4 had temp of almost 107- for four days- took her to the ER twice and her pediatricain- they kept telling me it was a virus- as they were handing me the ER discharge papers the second time in the ER I said now your sure this is normal- I'm sure my tone of voice was more like listen **** head- my kid is sick stop giving me this virus BS- she won't eat or drink and she has had extremely high fevers for four days- then he was like oh I guess we could take an xray- I said ok- and I want to see them when you are done. She had big old spot of pnemunia in her right lung. This was about 7 years ago- long before I wanted to be a nurse - being a pushy parent does pay off- no one ever cares about your kids like you do and I swear if mom says somethings wrong- you better believe her.

She was a day 1 post op choley back in the mid-80's.
I had received report from the 3-11 RN, and he told me her VS were all good. I made first rounds to find her room full of clueless visitors, all sitting around chatting while this poor woman sizzled. I can still see her eyes. They were open and covered (over the entire eyeball) with a horrible crusty looking film. She was literally too hot to touch and you could feel the heat coming off her just standing next to her bed. Me and another LPN packed her in ice while our RN called the surgeon (I was an LPN then and we were not allowed to call docs).
All he ordered was a one-time dose of tylenol suppository. My charge told him that was not acceptable, and if he didn't give her appropriate orders and transfer the patient to ICU, she'd find a doc who would.
She ended up on the vent, going back to surgery to drain a huge abscess at the surgical site, and surprisingly she DID live. She was sent to the surgical floor after the second surgery, and I don't know what happened after that; our supervisor did tell us that after being extubated and sent to the regular floor, she ended up "not quite right".
I can imagine.
( I did give that supp while awaiting the ICU bed; not that it did any good...it melted and turned to goo before I even got it inside her)

108+, malignant hyperthermia on an ER pt. Don't recall his original complaint. I got real familiar with Dantrium that night!
Highest tempt due to illness: 106.8 on a child. Tylenol and Pediaprofen did wonders!

Hm I really can't remember what the highest temp I have seen was... around 106 I think... I work on a floor that gets a lot of neuro patients and as you can tell by a lot of these posts, the neuro patients tend to have crazy temps! We have had some where we have had to alternate between a warming blanket and a cooling blanket. I had a patient last night with a super low temp and no matter what I did it still wouldn't go up!

106.7 which was my step daughter. Not a good experience at the ED either as the nurse totally read her symptoms wrong! She was VERY septic but had a nurse yell for psych consult because Jen was 'going off' and using language I had never heard!! Her brain was frying. She was shutting down, tachypneic, cyanotic yadda yadda yadda
She felt Jen was 'coming down' of drugs as she yelled at me what drugs does she do!!
Well cut a long story short we NEVER saw that nurse again!!
One should never label a patient before full assessment etc has been done.
Jen was in crisis and needed help not judgement.
She was stablized, admitted to ICU for IVI a/b's and care. After 5 days in ICU she was able to move and finally come home.

107.1 myself. MRSA uterine infection after 2 weeks hospitalization for premature rupture of membranes. Emergency C-Section of my 28 wk son.
Just felt I wanted to add that I kinda hope when i do die I go with a fever like that. It was the most amazing feeling I've ever had. Pretty miserable getting there, but truly euphoric once I passed 107. I remember the Doc coming in and saying, " we're going to have to get him out of there right away cause if we don't you are both going to die. If he lives he lives. If he dies, he dies, but you're both be dead if we don't get him out." He lived :)
I've told my family tho that if i ever pass 106 again, just leave me be and keep the tylenol and ice away!
