What the heck do these people think?

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Is it just me, or has anyone else encountered people (non-nursing students) that make comments like :angryfire"Oh, ns can't be that hard" or "Why do you have to study so much" or "She doesn't need anything for test anxiety". Unless you are in ns, or been through it, these folks honestly don't have a clue. One of my fellow students has really bad text anxiety. On the scantron she marked 14 answers "off a row" and missed them all and actually had them correct. Her spouse told her to just shake it off that there isn't anything wrong, she just needs to re-adjust her test taking skills - that doing poorly on one test isn't a big deal. Well, one poor grade in ns can be difficult to pull up. I know I am rambling on, but I sure wish there was a way for people to see the sacrifices we as students make in order to make it through ns. It just burns me up! What do y'all think?

After being out of school for 30 years, NS was what I expected. Alot of hard work and understanding from family members. I graduate next week.

since I am a guy, the classic why dont you just become a doctor!!! Which I HATE!!!

Maybe those people think you are so smart that you should become a doctor, and not because you are male. You shouldn't be offended by such a nice compliment.

Because there is no connection between being male and being a doctor dear.

I have a BS and a Master's and neither was as time consuming as nursing school is. That being said, I enjoy it, and have learned to budget my time more wisely. This will be important once we are done and actually doing the job. And I agree, no one understands unless they've been through it.

i agree with a couple of others on here: nursing school (RN) was pretty pleasant and not nearly as difficult as what some were making it out to be. Reflecting back on it while in graduate school, I would absolutely love to retake basic nursing again. :)

I understand exactly what ur saying. Alot of people who are not a nurse or planning to be one know anything about it and think that when you say "I plan to study the whole weekend", its some sort of excuse. I lost a boyfriend during my 2nd semester of nursing school. He was always saying he didnt understand why I had to go to school 8hrs a day, study for like 4hours a day and still need the weekend to study. And he always wanted me to go over to his house and study and I'm like thats impossible. He didn't get that I had a quiz everyday and 2 test atleast every week. Nursing school is especially hard because you not only responsible for the care of your patients but your also responsible for the care that your CNA gives as well as looking over DR orders to make sure it's appropriate because if the dr order's something wrong as a nurse your responsible for pt well being and if you give an inappropriate drug your in trouble. A hospital will fire 10 nurses before they will let 1 dr go. And as a person I couldn't live with myself if I caused harm to someone even if it was a mistake . I love nursing and its what I'm passionate about and I know others agree with me. Keep up the good work.

Im in my second year of my RN degree, it is tough, nothing more, nothing less!!! I think alot of this is based on outside commitments already in your life.. Ive 4 chiildren and am doing it and sometimes time is non exsistant with my family and stresses rise... I think that if you want it bad enough you will persivere... if you fail a paper, youll return to repeat it.. 'i did" .. I think as long as the people around you know and understand the intensity of the programme you will survive and graduate... god bless
