I have no probelm with gross secretions or anything like that..which is odd, almost eveyone I know has probelms with this and rightfully so..it is gross.
But everyone in med has their "ebbie geebie" point...mine is...get this...EYES! Oh I can't handle eyes at all. Get weak if I put eyedrops in, almost faint if I have to remove contacts...and I know I will faint if I ever saw blood outside of an eyeball!
I have never had eye trauma so I wonder why I immediately and without thought get grossed out at eyes?!?!?! It is like fears that take over...like heights or spiders...me it is looking closely at an eye! How wierd is that?!?!?!
I hate admitting patients who are brought in basically for nursing-home placement.....you can't get a history, their family members are usually long gone by the time they come up from ER, and they almost always need total care because they're confused and crawling OOB, combative, incontinent, unable to feed themselves, or so obese they can't do anything for themselves and need to be 'turned and basted' every 2 hours. These pts are hard on everybody......I just wish people would realize that hospitals are NOT a babysitting service, and not wait until matters are completely out of control before looking around for a place for Mom or Dad.
HeyI thought it would be interesting to see what things nurses dread doing. For example, I hate suctioning people, there is something about seeing stuff go thru the suc cath that flips me out. Weird huh? I can take vomitting, poop, blood etc, but when its contained in that suc cath and moving thru to the cannister, I get sick. What about the rest of you?

Geeze, it's hard to limit it to just one thing....
If I had to pick ONE thing thatreally makes me want to yak, it would be taking dentures out of someone's mouth and there's food and stuff caked all over them. Now, I've never had a problem with bedpans, I can even suction people without a problem, but just the THOUGHT of handling those slimy things with only-god-knows-what all over them makes me want to blow chunks...Am I weird? LOL:confused:

No, not at all.......that's my other most-disliked chore! I can handle anything, from the grossest infected wounds to ostomies, but dentures make me wanna hurl! EEEEEEEWWWWWWWWW!!!!

"OOOOhhhh, Social Services - I have a new one for youuuuu!" hehe
I can tolerate PO'd family members - most of the time they are grieving or scared. I can also tolerate body fluids and smells.
What gives me the heebee geebees is the 30 to 60 y/o ETOHers/Drug Abusers that think they are Cassanova and start hitting on me. ICK! Uh, no thanks sweetheart - I'm married (Thank God)!

OMG something similar happened to me one time....
I was working night shift in a nursing home, and we had this really nasty old guy that used to wake up thinking I was his wife and just start grabbing all over me LOL....I was like "ummmmmm...dude..how do I put this nicely....NO!!"
But I think it's cute that when some of these residents don't know my name...they'll call me "that little crippled boy" (I have cerebral palsy)...then they'll say "oh he is so nice...I just love when he takes care of me" LOL
That just makes my night....that or when they give me a hug and tell me "thank you" for the simplest thing...even just getting them water...it reminds me of why I became an STNA to begin with :chuckle
