Nurses General Nursing

The other day at work I had a series of small issues with a patient. First, I couldn't get the CPM to fit right no matter what adjustmants I made. So I brought in our floor "CPM expert" to help get it properly fitted.

Then, the blocks started leaking. I got our block expert into the room to see if she could help me find the cause (as I suspected it was a defect in the line, nothing I could do about it).

I told the patient, that these nurses were the best with these issues, and whenever possible I like to get another set of eyes. We have "experts" on the floor when it comes to IVs, Foleys, NGs... just about any procedure imaginable.

So, that got me thinking about what my co-workers come and get me for. What my "expertise" is... and I suppose it's when people are going downhill. I am able to keep my head in a stressful situation and rattle off what needs done. I also seem to be the one who trusts the gut and can tell if a patient is going downhill before the obvious signs show up. I will chart in or right outside a patient room and when a coworker asks why I'm being anti-social my response will often be "I'm waiting for this patient to give me a reason to send them to the ICU."

So, brag on yourself... and if you are so inclined share any tricks.

Let's see...I'm good at putting children at ease and getting them to tell my what's wrong. I'm a school nurse, so a lot of my nursing is actually good listening skills, a little teaching, a little mothering, and a little social work. I am very good at explaining medical things in terms that our (very undereducated) parents can understand.

Specializes in LTC, medsurg.

I am good at anticipating pt needs and usually have their needs met within 5 minutes or less of them asking....such as pain meds, bathroom asst. ive been told that I help raise pt satisfaction scores.I've been on the pts side so many times so I think that really helps contribute to the empathy I feel for my pts. I'm also the 'go to' person on my floor for help with computer issues from co workers. (:

I am good at staying calm in stressful situations (be it code, agressive pt, etc). I am also known as being a good team player because if a co-worker is drowning or stressed I am typically the one jumping in to do whatever I can to help them out.

I've pretty much developed a love love love relationship with IVs and I'm the go to for tough ones now. If I could just do that all day I would love my job so much :-)

I'm decent at calming down confused/combative dementia patients :) also, I love being told "your rooms always look so nice and neat!"
