What field of nursing are ya'll interested in?

I told a classmate from my community college that I have decided to be a Neonatal Nurse. She said, "Oh, yeah...everybody that goes into nursing wants to be a neonatal nurse. It is very competitive to get in the NICU. You have to work on other floors for a couple of years and keep applying to work in NICU." That kind of bummed me out.

Is that true? Do most of you want to work in the NICU? I thought not everyone would like to work with such small babies. I figured most nurses would like patients who could actually speak or tell you what is hurting them. What type of nurse do you all hope to become?

Specializes in Urgent Care.

No one in my class has plans to work in a NICU. I plan to go into critical care.

We have a mixed bag actually. Med/surg, ER, hospice, home health, TLC, and OB tend to be the main areas of interest.

Specializes in Operating Room.

No it's not true. You'll learn not to listen to what everybody says, I'm still learning that now. My friend is graduating next week, and she got a job on a NICU, which she got about 6 weeks ago, so it is possible. Don't get bummed out! And not everybody wants to do NICU, maybe something with peds, but not necessarily NICU. Good luck!

let's see...

nicu

picu

prison nursing?!

icu

infectious disease

my "dream job" changes about once a week! that's what is so great about nursing school; we get a taste of everything.

definitely not:

psych

ob/l&d

Specializes in Cardiac ICU.

i've got my eye on cardiology. whether the cardiac lab, telemetry or icu...i like the idea of organ transplant and open heart surgery. :redbeathe:nurse:

It would be easier to tell you what field I don't want to go into LOL. I love all aspects of medical care and can't wait to really jump in and see where I end up.

I can tell you though I do NOT want to work NICU! Babies are lovely I have 3 of my own, but boy oh boy I don't want to deal with life and death with newborns, just not my area of expertise and outside my comfort level. I also know I defenitely don't want to do Labor and Delivery, my views are far too different then that of the medical community and I just would not be good in that area.

I am leaning more toward CCU (love the heart!) ICU, surgery, ER etc...I used to work in the ICU of a pretty good size hospital and I loved loved that area, that's what got me interested in nursing so I supose I am leaning toward, that however, I know once in school I will be exposed to so much more and just can't wait to see and learn it all LOL I figure I have a good 30+ years before I retire LOL.

the hospital i worked in did a lot of open heart surgery, i worked as a unit clerk in icu, we did a bout 2 a day coming back to our unit and it was really just amazing!! i did my report in ap on hypoplastic left heart, a good friend of mine has a daughter with this condidtion she was in our group and i was able to study much more on that topic and it is just so fascinating, i would love to be involved some way with the heart.

Specializes in Cardiac ICU.

in my previous life (before kids) i worked as a medical assistant for a cardiologist for about 10 years. cardiology just seems to "fit" - i'm interested, i understand the mechanics and it is just plain amazing!

i agree with you re: neonatal and l/d...just outside my comfort level, too!

i wish you the best!

That's what I have heard from others too...everyone wants to go into Maternity.

When I started toward my degree, I thought I wanted to go into Maternity...no question. But after thinking about it some more, I thought that pediatrics would be a good choice for me too. I know what area's I couldn't work in...LOL ER being one of them. I have a friend who graduated last year from the program and she said you won't know where you'll end up until you go through all of your clinicals...you may change your mind. That is really what makes up your mind for you is going through the experience...which totally makes sense.

So, yes, I have something in mind, but know it may change.

Good luck to everyone!

I have no desire to work in NICU. I think I am nervous about working with such small veins and having that much fine control. I would love to work in labor and delivery or oncology. Our teachers said that if you are interested in setting up preceptorship in a certain area you need to get A's in that clinical rotation. Don't get discouraged, just find out what you need to do to get there. Also, in going through rotations you may find you really like another area. I hope you end up getting the area you want. Good luck.

No interest whatsoever in peds, OB, or NICU. Now, I don't have that rotation until summer, so I might fall in love with it, but that would shock the heck out of me. I don't have any kids, and while I am planning to at some point, the whole "miracle of childbirth" thing doesn't do it for me. I'd rather pay a surrogate or something (or at least get the heaviest epidural possible so hopefully I have no memory of the pain). I'm planning on going on to become a CRNA, so I (and most people I know) are angling for the adult ICU rotations for our preceptorship and eventual jobs.

Specializes in med-surg.

I'm leaning toward midwifery & public health. There's maybe one person in our class intersted in NICU.
