I told a classmate from my community college that I have decided to be a Neonatal Nurse. She said, "Oh, yeah...everybody that goes into nursing wants to be a neonatal nurse. It is very competitive to get in the NICU. You have to work on other floors for a couple of years and keep applying to work in NICU." That kind of bummed me out.

Is that true? Do most of you want to work in the NICU? I thought not everyone would like to work with such small babies. I figured most nurses would like patients who could actually speak or tell you what is hurting them. What type of nurse do you all hope to become?

I like ER too, so far I want trauma nursing- I live in Tampa too- any info about Tampa General?

Best hospital for trauma. Best hospital for anything really they're a teaching hospital so all kinds of interesting cases come and go. They just got finished building a new ER and L&D. Unfortunately I'm in graduating from a LPN program and they don't hire LPN's anymore so I will apply after I get my RN. Worked there years ago as a patient sitter so I wouldn't mind going back. All the nurses seemed to have that whole teamwork thing going on which was rare in regards that EVERYONE got along. A lot of people don't like the hospital because of it being "county" but if anything ever happens and have to go to another hospital in the area and they can't treat you guess where you're going?

I'm one who also wants to go to the OR. I work as a Nurse Intern II on a busy Med/Tele floor and I already know floor nursing is not for me. When I did my OR rotation, I saw 3 surgeries and I was FASCINATED with them! I also love the fact that the OR runs on structure (I'm at my best in a structured environment), and there is focus on ONE patient and us (the medical team) work together as a team for the patient.

I would love to circulate and scrub. I'm also tossing around the idea of becoming a First Assist instead of getting my master's. That's what I like about the OR. I know some people say it's boring because they are just standing there watching the operation, but I love it when the surgeon explains what he is doing and why!

Before I entered nursing school, I watched Discovery Health and was just as fascinated by the surgeries I saw on TV and always thought how cool it would be to see them up close and personal.

This is also the same reasons why I am leaning towards this specialty. I look forward to learning the other areas also, but I think this area will be great for me. I have that same fascination for seeing operations. I lived on Discovery channel and loved to watch the surgeries (guess I am weird like that).
