What are the "extras" that you do?

Maybe it's that really good ice coffee I just drank, or maybe it's the beautiful spring weather we've been having in my neck of the woods, but this week I'm in the mood to start doing a little planning for next year. I'm new to my position- just reached the one year mark a few weeks ago- and so far it's been a lot of learning what my job actually is, along with all the paperwork and health needs of the littles.

I'm itching to do some more health education, outreach, and relationship-building with families next year. My question for all of you is, outside of the day-to-day clinic work that we all do, what are some "extras" that you like to do? I'm thinking about things like bulletin boards, blood drives, celebrating different health weeks...things like that. I know that these extras can take up what little time, resources, and support we already have, but I really enjoy it when I have the chance to provide these things to others. Any ideas that have worked well for you are welcome!

Specializes in kids.

Extra?

Weekend and summer lunch coordinator, work at athletic events, coordinate our YRBS every other year, coordinate concussion testing, Wellness committee, senior class findraiser coordinater, advisor to local nursing school program, active in my state association.

Plus all the daily fun stuff with the HS kids!!

Specializes in School Nursing, Pediatrics.

I dont really know if this "extra" but I do what the teachers do: for example: each month there is a theme and teachers decorate their doors for that theme, so I decorate my door with the theme as well. I participate in all school related activities, so the students see me there. I dress up on all the school spirit days (pajama day, sports day, hat day...etc..).

Specializes in Home Health,Dialysis, MDS, School Nurse.

This thread is kind of making me feel like a slacker.

Same. I could probably do more, but hey I've kept all of the kids alive so that's something, right?

I believe that's #1 on the job description!

Bisquit...that is everything!!!

Specializes in Community and Public Health, Addictions Nursing.

Wow! All the ideas I've seen on this thread sound amazing! Looking back at my original thread title, it sounds like some school nurses can be more "extra" than a 16 year old girl getting ready for prom (and I am saying that in the BEST way possible- I love how active you all are in your schools!) Now the real challenge is to see how long I can stay motivated to get some new ideas rolled out for next year ?
