I would like to know exactly what this is and what it entails. I'm assuming it's some kind of performance exam but am unsure from there. TIA

The Clinical Performance in Nursing Examination (CPNE®) tests the application of the nursing process and technical components of nursing practice in the care of adults and children in acute care settings.

It's a 2.5 day exam, where you will be expected to perform 3 of 4 lab simulations (wound, IM/SubQ injection, IV push, and IV meds), with 100% accuracy (besides standard deviations in drip rate) using the "Critical Elements" within a specific time limit for each. If you fail any of these you will be given one chance to retake that particular lab the next day.

You will have to peform basic patient care (assigned area's of care), using the "Critical Elements", in three PCS's two adult and one peds (or an adult substitute), you can epeat one adult and one ped, that weekend should you fail one.

The exam doesnt expect you to be super Nurse of all Nurses. But, it does expect you to perform like a new RN, making no mistakes (kind of an oxymoron), while following specific guidelines in order, and under presseure, and time constraints.

It currently costs $1900 plus the cost of travel and accommodations for the weekend. Many people take a workshop in preparation and buy study resources, that add to the cost. You can take the CPNE a maximum of three times before being dismissed from the program. If one is dismissed for failing the CPNE, one has to wait five years before reapplying to the program.
