What Do You Hate About Nursing School!

Published

I had an aweful day and need some humor to boost my mood.

O.K. I'll start.

Things I hate ablout nursing school!

When you get to clinical and your patient has been discharged, because you have to start a whole new careplan on a different patient.

When you find art history class difficult because you are trying to use critical thinking on your art exams.

When the ex-nurses aid that you have class with always tries to correct the instructor on every procedure because she "Worked as an aid for two years and that's not how they did it"

Let's vent everyone and try to add a little humor. Sometimes if I don't laugh about these things I just might cry. I'd rather laugh about them and keep some sanity (what little I have left at this point). Oh my goodness listen to me it's only October.

Gotta love that panty line

Don't wear any! :coollook:

Seriously, my pants are green. You can't see my flesh through them. Thongs or commando, baby! (If they were white pants, I think I'd be sporting a lovely selection from the menswear department.....boxers!)

I hate not seeing my kids. My daughter asks me all the time when I'm gonna come home. Every day I leave her with the sitter she says, "Don't be gone too long!" I NEVER see my 5 year old. I put him on the schoolbus in the morning & I get home after he's in bed. I at least see the 2 little ones a bit on days I either have school or work but not both.

THis is what I absolutely can't stand about nursing school:

STUPID presentations

Feeling like I don't fit it with my class

driving 1 hour just to go to school

and much more...

I get frustrated with the students who complain the most about how bad they think they did on a test, only to find out later that they got the A you were hoping to get and didn't.

I hate not spending time with my daughter. She understands and allows me to go to school but she tells me to come straight back (she's 3). I hate not spending time with my boyfriend (her father). I hate missing an A by one point. I hate having friends whose sole purpose is to make a better grade than you. I hate the time consumption.

Being with so many people four days a week.

Losing all your brains when your doing something in front of your clinical instructors.

MEAN STAFF NURSES--who treat students AND their patients disrespectfully. They need to leave the profession.

The guilt trips from extended family when they say things like "I guess I'll see you at the holidays."

A lack of balance--all work and no play makes jill a real b*****!

Ok, it could be worse. Our psych instructor who graduated in 1957 from and ADN lived at school for three years and did clinical on weekends nights and holidays!!! So I guess I'll count my blessings.

Losing all your brains when your doing something in front of your clinical instructors.

Ain't that the truth! I have even practiced stuff in the lab, and when it came time to do it for real, I truly screwed up!

1) I hate missing my 4 kids and all of their baseball games and school functions.

2) I hate not seeing any of my non-nursing school friends. Thank God for email - when I have the time to respond.

3) I hate that we have post-conference for about 3 1/2 hours in clinicals. No kidding. We're read to like we're 2yo's.

4) I hate thinking that next semester I'll be with a whole new clinical group. I love the people in my group. We all get along great and help each other.

5) I hate the 1 hr, 15 minute commute at 6:30 am. It's getting old, no matter how many new song's I d/l and CD's I burn.

6) I hate missing Red Sox games!

7) I hate the stress. I'm not sleeping (not due to not trying, but have insomnia now) due to worrying about studying, not being there for my kids, not doing well on exams, and my bitter soon-to-be-ex husband.

I AGREE WITH THAT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:crying2:

BEING BROKE and in debt up to your eyeballs!!! :crying2:

1. Introducing multiple new skills to us at once. I don't know about you, but I'd prefer to just learn caths one day and then work on another skill another day.

2. Like someone else said, a single 2 min demo for a 20 step procedure. Um, I think I caught steps 1, 2, 19 and 20. Can we go over the rest again?

3. When the teacher teaches us something differently than the book does, then when it comes time to study for the test, deciding which method to study as the correct one.

4. In skills lab, being taught a skill by the teacher and then working with 3 other teachers in skills lab who all perform the skill differently. Then comes skills check-off, and you might have any one of 4 the teachers. Which teacher wanted me to do it which way???

5. And most importantly, not having much time to spend with my little boy. When I'm finally home, I'm studying. I just want to play with him, laugh with him, watch him play. I'm in nursing school to provide a better life for him, but is this what's best???

That did feel good to get off my chest! :)

...Jennifer...

I feel for you, Jennifer. I have a 7 year old son who I feel like I neglect as well, but I know he's young and this is going to pay off in the long run. It will be worth it - just try to see the light at the end of the tunnel and not look at it as if it's an oncoming train!!

What I hate about nursing school is wondering if you are cut out to be a nurse. I am one of those people who is a slow learner and I hate it. :crying2: Also, on the exams, I always changed my answers and at the end finding out that your original answer turns out to be correct. I have to stop doing that next time.

Hopefully, I can make it through first semester. No time for anything.

Take stuff with you to your kids' games to work on/study for school if you can. I do that once a week when my son goes to karate. He's about to go start soccer so things may get a little hectic because I am about to start evening clinicals. Thank goodness my husband and my m-i-l are able to help.
