What is your BIGGEST pet peve about school nursing ?

Published

Okay, I'll go first. If I had to narrow it down, it would have to be parents who send their sick, feverish child to school with the orders to "go see the nurse right away". And then I cannot reach them by phone when I call them. Happens all the time and I am extremely tired of this. Border's on child neglect.

Glad I'm not the only one with the same pet peeves as everyone else here! Another pet peeve would be when teachers/staff second guess my decision to keep a student here at school, and call home anyhow, even after my assessment and conclude the student will be well enough to stay in school. If a parent does call back to try to give me h--- for making them pick up their child for nothing, as when the child gets home, they're fine. I can honestly say to the parent, it wasn't my decision to have you called and to ask you to pick up your child.

I agree with everyone completely!! Teachers, parents and office staff are my main problem. I absolutely love the kids at the school. The main reason for the frequent flyers here are the simple fact that they don't get enough attention at home. And they most often make up things to get a little extra attention here. The office staff is my main problem. They LOVE to try and do my job for me. For example, they take ALL the calls that really should be directed to the clinic. Also, the teachers love to diagnose the kids. (i.e.-fever, pink eye, fifths disease) The kids come in and say, my teacher told me I have a fever. I'll say, did the teacher use a thermometer. The child says no, she just felt my head. Usually the child has no fever. My other pet peve is when staff uses the restroom here in the clinic and they don't wash their hands. Kids I can understand, cause theyre young, you just have to teach them. But adults! Well, its nice to vent! :banghead:

Wow ! all the above and so much more. My biggest pet peve is when kids come to the HR before the first bell even rings. They basically want to go home before school even starts ! Another one is when kids want to go home 5 minutes before dismissal ! No fever, no vomiting, no diarrhea, five minutes and your home, no go back to class and get ready for dismissal like every other kid !

Nursingstudent19,

I don't know the kid you're talking about, so you know the situation better than I. but I did have a kid who came down very late in the day all the time wanting to go home. I found out from talking to her that she was getting picked on terribly on the bus. This accounted for the afternoon sickness. Once the bully was taken care of and the bus driver was made aware to watch the situation, she went home on the bus everyday.

Right on girlfriend ! Had some of them today :p:p:p

I make the kids that jump off the bus and come straight to the health room go to class first to "check in" with teacher and get a pass. After they do that, then they can come back and see me. I can say that most never return!
