What are the best shoes for nursing?

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

I'm a new grad. Most of my previous positions required me to stand for long periods of time and I never really found the shoe that worked for me. The best I found were Crocs, but I'm not a fan of how they look. I'm very interested in people's opinion and what works well for them. I don't want to fight daily back pain and sore feet. I know that is going to happen, but I would like to minimize it as much as I can. I was going to buy the Dansko but wanted to get some feedback first.

I have had knee pain most of my life (had surgery when i was 14) and when i first became a nursing assistant i worked at a nursing home and ever since then ive had occasional sciatic nerve pain. For these reasons I was very hesitant to get dansko but i decided to go for it and i LOVE them. My only complaint is the rainbow sparkle ones I got the patent leather began to peel off. The walking company said it was a bad batch and I got new ones which have been great. No back pain, no knee pain. If they arent comfortable or you dont like them most stores are good about taking them back

I wear Danskos, and I cannot say enough wonderful things about them! I was hopeful that they'd work for me, as I injured my back fairly severely last year in a car accident and have lingering back pain issues. NO back pain, and my feet feel GREAT at the end of a long day.

I am a nursing student and wear Dansko as well...still in the breaking in phase but so far so good....

I think you have to take your own feet into consideration. I have a very high arch so I need lots of support and cushion. I love my Brooks Ghost running shoes. I have Ghost 4 but will be upgrading to Ghost 5 soon.

Everyone's feet are different so it is probably going to be best to try on a lot of different shoes to see how comfy they are. My feet are VERY picky and I can only wear certain shoes and since I have plantar fasciitis in one of my feet, they must have good cushioning.

A lot of people recommend Danskos but I hate them. I tried on a pair and literally had it on for less than 2 minutes and my PF started acting up. They are extremely hard, like standing on concrete for me but lots of other people's feet like that.

I like Alegrias a lot and I just recently bought a pair of Crocs Mercy. I wore them to work this week and they are really good. http://www.zappos.com/crocs-mercy-work-black-silver

I also have a pair of Crocs Neria ordered but I haven't gotten them yet. I've heard good things, though. http://www.zappos.com/crocs-neria-work-black

You said you liked Crocs but not the look. These days, Crocs come in a wide variety of styles so maybe you can find one you like!

Do some research on z-coils. They are the reason I can still do 12 hr shifts in ICU with minimal discomfort. Not much pricier than Dansco and they wear like iron. I still have my first pair- I use them for day trips to a theme park or museum. Seriously minimizes wear and tear on joints . At 59, no arthritis while most of my other "mature" co- workers have had at least one joint replacement.

My feet/knees/legs have been saved by Danskos and Sanita clogs! I swear by them! Check out clog outlet.com. They sell Sanita clogs as factory 2nds; I got mine for basically 1/2 off and I can't find a thing wrong with them to make them so low-cost! Site very user-friendly and shipped quickly. Try them...you will love the clogs and the service!

I have not tried the Dansko yet. I wear Everywears clogs ( they look like Crocs) and wow what a difference. The look I dont care for, and my feet get very sweaty in them ( no ventilation) but wow my feet adore them. the other thing I like is that they are very non slip and even on wet tile and shower rooms, I have great grip and no chance of slipping. Gotta love that!

Like most have posted..you just need to find what works for you. Myself, I have flat feet and most new balance shoes have arch supports, so I wear those and I also use the dr. scholls inserts, the "foot mapping" technology ones. My feet and knees have been abused from 10 years of military service and 2 years of combat and those insoles have worked wonders for me!

Check out New Balance. A very sage piece of advice I got when I was hunting for my first pair of shoes: "Don't skimp on your shoes". Price is almost no object here. Obviously everyone is different, but I love my all leather New Balance shoes.
