What is the best NYC hospital for a fresh grad?

Published

any NYC nurses, please let me know the hospital for fresh grad to start. I'm looking for better training and nurse retention as well as competitive salary.

thanks a lot :)

I heard that Staten Island University Hospital has tuition reimbursement as well. But I've also heard that nurses may get anywhere from 6-12 patients.

That patient-to-nurse ratio is crazy! Here in Oregon, on the tele unit, we get 4 pts MAX- and that's on night shift. I mean, they're on TELE, for crying out loud!!

Are the patient-to-nurse ratios this bad in most NYC hospitals? I'm just used to West coast nursing, and it seems like the west coast is a lot more reasonable in terms of staffing and more generous in terms of salary/benefits than NYC hospitals.

Salary here is very good.

With a 2 year degree, I can make about 60k a year right after graduation.

Are you even able to take a break with that kind of patient load on a tele unit?? I am very curious. Do NYC hospitals treat their nurses well, or like slaves? I am really just asking cuz I want to travel nurse there eventually, but the conditions sound bad compared to what I've gotten used to in the "easy" west coast.

From what I hear it depends on the hospital.

And by state law they have to provide you with a break.

Specializes in Mother-Baby, Antenatal.

Anyone work at Roosevelt Hospital in Maternal-child???? Would you recommend it?

And by state law they have to provide you with a break.

Right. But it seems to be a myth in many nurses' working environments, law or no law.

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be graduating with a BSN in Dec and am going to be moving to nyc. What sort of salary are new grads getting? Also, has anyone heard anything about Beth Israel? I was thinking about applying there.

Thanks!

I was recently a patient at Columbia Presbyterian and very surprised to learn that the staff and patients are not allowed to use the drinking water to drink, brush teeth, or shower without the docs permission. All nurses and patients get bottled water. There was a Legionairres Disease scare there 2 years ago, and someone died. They still continue the precautions. I didn't shower or brush my teeth for 5 days. I wasn't really comfortable there. I don't feel like working there anymore. Does anyone have any more information on this? Would it bother you? Am I being too much of a hypochondriac?

Does anyone know anything about Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn? Did they change their name? I almost went to nursing school there, and I was wondering what it would be like to work there all these years later. Krisssy
