I cant speak from experience about this but from what I hear, NY Methodist Medical Center in Park Slope, Brooklyn and Maimonides Medical Center, also in Brooklyn, are gaining a reputation among Brooklyn RNS as being THE places to work in this borough.
Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens and the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan are the only Magnet Award winning hospitals in the whole city. Thats an award from the ANCC - a division of the ANA - & is given to hospitals that have created a positive work environment for nurses, made a committment to their nurses, provide exceptional support for new grads, respect, value, & treat nurses right. Theres only 74 award winning facilities in this entire country. NYC has only those 2. Start with them. Or hike over to Jersey - theyve got the majority of the nursing award winning Magnet facilities.
Good luck.
no. each facility has to apply separately & meet strict criteria. The process takes about 2 years. The award is for the hospitals proven excellence to nurses. LIJ & Northshore (Manhasset) have achieved Magnet status. Other hospitals in the same system (SIUH, for example) have not. They have to earn it themselves with things like excellent salaries, benefits, and working environment, inclusion of staff RNs in all facets of decision-making in the business of the hospital, etc. They have to prove their own committment to their staff nurses. They cant just ride in on the coat tails of other facilities that have .
I'm at Columbia-Presbyterian. It isn't bad. They are applying for magnet status and I can't complain about the salary. They have been very supportive of my various religious obligations as well.
How was the orientation over there? Do you have any choice in specialty if you are inexperienced? Krisssy
A good hospital for a new graduate nurse in NYC is New York Hospital or Columbia Presbyterian. They have an excellent and thorough orientation program. There are plenty of resources for new graduates.
As a reentry nurse with no hospital experience, do you think Columbia Presbyterian would be a good first job? Do they place you wherever they need you or do you have any choice of specialty? Krisssy
