with times and technology changing, what do you think the average age of a nursing student is in 2012?

I think the mix of ages is great. For some, like me, it is about trying something new. I have a BA and MEd but just wanted to give something else a try (especially since I have always been interested in medicine) after having my children. Others who are older were busy with their families and now have the time and support to go back to school.
The experiences and backgrounds of the older students can really add a lot to the classroom experience. And, I would venture to say that many of them are excellent students, so thus they make GREAT study partners.
Virgolove34, I you should never look back and think you wasted time. You were growing up, figuring things out, having fun . . . whatever it was, you are here now. And one day when you are "old" like me, you may reexamine and think, "Hey, I want to try something else!" and you can!

I can't speak for the day students, but at night we have a good mix. From people in their 20's all the way up to 60's. I am 31.

In my ADN program I'm the you test in my program and I started at 18 in orientation and am now 19. The oldest is 52 or 53. I would say that the majority of our class falls between 23 and 38.

At my school, they are pretty young(well honestly, different classes have different ages--i know there are some higher up classes that graduate soon that are upper 20's early 30's)....My class is a baby class except for a few. They are all 19-22 for the most part with a few olders thrown in. Im 28, I think we have 2 in their mid 30's, there's about 2-3others in their mid to late 20's. the rest are under 22.

A question for the ages...
Sorry,
I am very interested in the subject of the average age of Nursing students. I will be the outlier in the average age of nursing students. Looking at age 56 on entry to nursing school. I earned a degree in Hydrology (math/chemistry/physics) with a minor in environmental toxicology eons ago, will likely retire in Dec 2013. I am now working on my encore career - a second degree (BSN) in Nursing. So far 40+ hrs work per week and a 4.0 in pre-requisite coursework.
My current job is very good but as I near retirement I am becoming more and more dedicated to achieving my dream of earning a nursing degree. Career-wise, work as a civilian nurse in the US Army or VA is first and foremost for employment. As a disabled veteran myself I know well the distress, both physical and emotional, these brave young Americans are dealing with. Helping our injured young military veterans transition back into civilian life with a healthy attitude is my personal "giving back". I have been extremely fortunate and I will leave no one behind.
As I stated earlier in the thread, I'm the youngest in class, starting nursing school at 18. I will graduate in 2.5 months and will be (currently am) 20. Our oldest classmate, who is 52, has done very well. She is so funny and animated. She doesn't seem or act like someone some might think a 50 year old would. She is full of life and vibrant, as many 50 and 60 year olds I know are! She actually has one of the highest GPAs in our class, and has seen we started. Age is o Luna number! It might alter the way or rate you do something's sometimes, but it doesn't change the possibilities for one!

2 of my friends from HS have their BSN , working, while getting their Masters they're in their early 20s, like most traditional NS right outa HS.
In my ADN most are second-career students, ranging from from 19 to late 50s. Many accerelated programs attract older NS, it's quick. I would Think mid 30s and should be climbing . So diversity is the word. But that's a good thing!

We were told the average age of a nursing student at my school is 34, but it totally varies, definitely a lot of students in their 20's and many in late 40's, so I guess it averages out to be 34.

In mine, I'd say low 30's. We have one in her 50s, I'm in my 40's, most in their 30's, two are 27 and our youngest is 22
