What would you answer for this test question?

Published

Just wondering. I got it right, but other students were asking and I can see both sides. My instructor said this is an NCLEX question

I only remember 2 of the answers, and like so many nursing school questions, these were the two I was going between. This is for my OB class

What is the number one reason for babies temperature dropping?

A. Heat loss

B. Immature thermoregulation

OR...it could be A for the same exact reason. It's a lot warmer inside of the womb than it is in a delivery room, and when the baby is delivered, they initially lose a lot of heat and do not have the thermoregulation center in their brain to warm them up. I'm changing my answer to A lol..

You know, I hate those "two right answers, but one is right-er." LOL!!

Specializes in ICU.

Yeah which is right-er! Drives me crazy.

I would go with B - let us know when you find the answer out.

No OB yet, but I'd put B if I was guessing right now.

b. immature thermoregulation

there's a nursing diagnosis for this that i am always giving out when students are asking for nursing diagnoses for newborns: ineffective thermoregulation

Interesting! I am in my OB rotation right now, and based on what we've learned I think the answer should be A.

I just had OB and Peds last semester and that same question was on one of my tests and the answer was inadequate thermoregulation

B. Thermoregulation

Hmmmm.... Our answer was the opposite.

Babies lose heat because of heat loss secondary to immature thermoregulation.

I can see it being the other way too though. Babies have immature thermoregulation resulting in heat loss.

Either way, I did fine on the test. I got this one right, but I was discussing it with a classmate who was questioning it and saw her thought process as well.

right - babies do lose heat because of heat loss secondary to immature thermoregulation... therefore the thermoregulation is the primary cause.

So I was right? LOL! It's B?

My thought process was:

If there was MATURE thermoregulation, there would be no heat loss. Heat loss is a byproduct of immature thermoregulation.

So I was right? LOL! It's B?

Sorry, I just realised I didn't clarify. The answer was A: heat loss
