WGU So Cal August Cohort

Nursing Students Western Governors

Published

I just submitted my application for the August cohort. I will be coming from San Diego, so will do my clinicals [presumably] in Orange County. If you're applying for August in So Cal, feel free to pop in and commiserate. :)

It is a shame that after all this time in the area, WGU is so 'restrictive'. Cedars should not be allowed to use WGU as a degree 'mill' for its employees. Giving preference to 50% of each class, or better yet 25% of each class, could be seen as fair. But to commandeer every cohort that goes through Cedars does a great disservice to area personnel who do not have the good fortune of having been hired by C-S.

I agree it's unfortunate, but I'd imagine the school is powerless in it. If they disagree, then Cedars could just pull their contract for clinicals and then no one gets to go. I spoke to the California director months ago and she told me how they were having a hard time obtaining clinical spots and that the board of nursing is biased against the "hybrid" style of learning and have thus made it hard for to get more clinical spots at different hospitals.

I agree that they are at the mercy of their clinical partners. I guess that I am just frustrated because I was led to believe since February that I was going to get into this program (so much so that I turned down another program and already have all the books).

First, the April cohort gets cancelled and offers rescinded. People in limbo for months not knowing what is happening to them re their offers. Then, you are told by the director herself that there would be two cohorts in August (and I'm told not to bother retaking my TEAS, when I knew I could have scored better, because I was such a "strong candidate").

Then, August turns out to only have one cohort, which is filled almost exclusively from the people whose offers were rescinded in April. Then, I am told that I am such a strong candidate (purportedly ranked second out of all the applicants), so to please apply for October.

But then later, after being told that Cedars employees would get a "preference" in admissions, it turns out that I actually have zero chance of being selected for October because the cohort is *exclusively* for Cedars folks.

Now they are saying that there won't be another cohort until May at Huntington because they've lost their clinical partner in OC (for the time being -- no one knows how long). Meanwhile, they are getting 350+ applicants for each cohort of 10-12 spaces, with each group not selected just rolled over to the next cycle to compete with the next 350+ applicants. It just feels futile, at this point, and people should really be aware of the exceedingly long odds in applying to the program.

You have every right to be upset and frustrated, and by no means did I mean to diminish your feelings. If I came across that way, I do sincerely apologize. You never know what is going to happen and if it is your dream, I say keep going, you're extremely qualified for it. Unfortunately, the program seems to be falling apart right now.

Remember though they had gotten approved by Placentia Linda hospital to have more cohorts there; however, it was declined by the CA BRN. You never know if and when the CA BRN could approve that contract. I had read posts on this forum of people getting called out of the blue with an offer of admission because they were able to start another cohort due to a newly acquired clinical partner.

Keep your head up!

Disregarding any culpability on the part of in any of the situations described by the OP, the very existence of all of this "flux" and, at times, misinformation, is one big reason why I turned away from the idea of continuing to deal with the school. And that decision was made years ago, when one could make an excuse for a new program having problems getting up and running.

Anyone recently apply to ?

Anyone recently apply to WGU?

In So Cal, there are no other cohorts planned until May 2019. The last cohort, in October 2018, was filled exclusively with Cedars Sinai employees. The April 2018 cohort was cancelled, so the August 2018 cohort was filled with mostly previously admitted applicants from the cancelled April cohort.

In sum, you have a better chance of getting into Harvard Medical School than you do in So Cal. I wish I was kidding.

BUMMER! I really wanted to go there, I liked the "convenience " of the program. I hope they open up more cohorts, May is too far away. I read the previous post, that's unfortunate for EVERYONE else that Cedars gets their own cohort. Will they have other 2019 cohorts? I guess it doesn't matter, it's too competitive

Seriously it sucks.

I was really hoping & praying to get into . It was Perfect for me as a mom who has her own small business. Does anyone know if they will continue to give open spots to Cedars employees?

I just wanted to let others know that they have opened up 8 clinical spots in Orange County for a Feb 1st start date. I received a phone call this morning that I was admitted to the program! Good luck to others waiting to hear. I know how stressful the wait can be.

Omg! Congrats! !! I received an email that basically stated apply to other programs because it's so impacted lol. I'm so happy to hear that they're still taking students outside of Cedars. Congrats to you, keep us updated with your program !

Glad to hear it's finally working out for you!
