WGU BSN prelicensure inquiry

Published

Is it possible to do WGU BSN prelicensure program a full time student?

I understand that the program is designed for the working student, but it's also self paced and I excel in independent study.

Thanks in advance for ALL the feedback :geek:

Hi-

WGU is the only program I applied to that would accept online courses. CSU-SM as well as the other ADN programs I applied to did not. however their expiration rules were much different as well.

Wgu requires all those 3 classes to be at least 5 years recent. All the other programs I applied for would take Anatomy classes up to 10 years old (mine was 9), Physiology courses 9 yrs old (mine were 7) and Microbio up to 7 yrs old (mine was 5)

Hopw this helps!

It was Ok. My major was in physiology in college and I actually re-took AP2 at the local CC prior to enrolling in AP1 w/ SL... Therefore it felt like a lot of review for me. Even so, some of the questions are so specific that's if have a hard time believe anyone would remember the answers. That being said my lowest quiz score was 80%. Then midterm and final were kinda gnarly but not too terrible. They give you several very easy questions and a few hard ones. There is no feedback at all in the labs as to why you lose points or which answers were wrong etc. So that was a bit annoying lol. Took me 4 months to finish while I worked full time!

oh wow! no feedback that's lame! But it's sooooo affordable and at least it counts! ... If WGU only bases admissions off your prerequisites gpa I might stand a chance if i work really hard. I had no idea it was only those few classes. I was not a science major so I am worried about the rigor. Overall, I am happy you have a good chance at gaining admission! The program is soooo affordable and you get to keep your job. Can't be any better than that lol

The NCLEX rates you Mention are a bit unnerving, but maybe with great study habits it's totally do able. Congrats on CSUSM as well! Great program I hear!

I think Straighterline is definitely a good way to get your pre-reqs out of the way of you want to start classes on your own time and need the flexibility of doing all the coursework at your own pace. However, they aren't that affordable, its 99$ subscription for every month, and about 50$ for each class, not including the actual lab equipment you need to purchase. I ended up spending ~$650 on my AP1 class through SL for 4 months. And I had a coupon! Again - if you cannot get into a regular local CC to do your classes, or going into certain class and lab times if difficult d/t your job or family responsibilities it is DeFINITeLY a great option :) Either way - You'll def need to put in a lot of time in these classes and they are very detailed, especially if you don't have exp in the topic previously.

I also wasn't really aware that WGU only counted the GPA for those 3 classes until I was halfway through retaking my first AP class, and it was disheartening as well. I could've had a lot closer to a 4.0 had they counted all the other classes. Oh well! The good thing about WGU is that they really take "a holistic" approach to each candidate so even if your GPA isn't super high, if you have other things to bring to the table they take that into consideration. So keep that head high for sure!

Thanks again! I'm very excited that i got into CSU-SM as it was my first choice. However, their tuition is 55K which makes it a little nerve-wracking especially since I wouldn't be able to keep my current amazing job (which is actually remote, and I work mostly from home!). Therefore, if I do get into WGU come November I will definitely have to reconsider my situation, since my employer doesn't really have any part-time positions. . . The longer I can keep my job the better for me and my finances.

Thank you for the insight on straighterline. Can't believe it cost that much I totally thought it would around 150 lol.

Your job sounds pretty awesome you should totally keep it as long as possible. .can't believe it's a remote position never leave haha jk . I have a pretty decent job as well and I'd like to keep it if possible. While WGU is totally affordable compared to other programs is still need income. I hope you get in!

It's weird seeing CA having low nclex pass rate last year. At WGU Utah and Indiana their nclex passrate is at 100% and 90% and the program is exactly the same.

Even the 2 years before that it was in the 80s, the last round was the worst.... that's the only reason I can concerned. I'd rather go to a school with 90%+ first time NCLEX than one that recently only had 66% know what I mean? Idk when the 15/16 scores would be updated.... to see if they improved

It could also just depend on the cohorts from year to year. Look at UCLA BSN for example they had a year where they went from 92% (2013) pass rate to 64% (2014) pass rate.

Makes sense. It would be pretty horrible to go to a nursing program and not be able to pass the nclex. Then again it could just depend on the Cohort, but I would want to know why such a dramatic drop.

GrenIedGal, would i be able to PM you as well, to get the name of the other school you applied to?

Thank you

It was UWOSH Oshkosh. They are the only two that I know of that do online classes and 1:1 preceptor clinicals. Feel free to PM me if you want further information tho!
