Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all!

I, being the impatient person that I am, decided to make a thread to discuss the upcoming cycle of applications for Western University of Health Sciences, Masters of Science in Nursing Entry program.

A little about me, my undergrad is a B.S. in Public Health, but I always was interested in the nursing field. After getting my CNA license I decided that this was the field for me and want to eventually go on to become a Nurse Practitioner. I've been working on my application and I'm very nervous/excited to hear back (even though that seems forever away haha). Anyone else applying for this cycle, and if so what are your thoughts on the program??

Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Hi, current student here.

EOA Day is not dependent solely on GPA. It's a chance for current students and faculty to feel you out and see if you're a good fit. They look at the whole picture. The writing test is not hard. If you wrote your own personal statement, you're chillin.

do we know how many applications they received and how many will be accepted ?

I have an update for those who are waiting for regular interview invitations. People should be receiving these invitations next week.

Regular Interview Dates (8am to 12p and 1pm to 5pm):

  • Wednesday, February 19th
  • Friday, February 21st
  • Monday, February 24th
  • Wednesday, February 26th
  • Friday, February 28th (tentative - 1/2 day; 8am-Noon)

Thanks for the update. Did you happen to hear or know if any more early-acceptance invites will be sent out? ? Thank you!

Alberto told me no more EAO invitations are being sent. I was borderline between EAO and regular interview invitation according to him, and I was not given an EAO opportunity. I got into Columbia on Monday, so I'm hoping I can get a decision for Western before March 2nd bc that's when they need to know if I'm going to attend or not.

I’m honestly starting to think they just accept early acceptance people and basically pad their waitlist with regular interviews. Some early accept people commit to other schools so some of those interview people get a shot at a seat. In reading past posts and speaking with past students, both accepted and waitlisted, it really seems like this is how they handle their applicants.

Yeah, it seemed like in my talks with Alberto, people who perform well in the EAO portion are guaranteed admission. Whomever doesn't do well gets invited back for the regular interviews for an evaluation. Their process doesn't seem as fair as other schools.

They also want me to redo anatomy and physiology bc apparently the California Board of Nursing specifically won't accept the courses I did, even though they were in-person and included labs.

So EAO people potentially get two chances while the rest of us aren’t really even considered for a seat unless EAO withdraws commitment? Wow I wasn’t aware of that. That doesn’t feel great! I’m surprised they don’t accept it if it meets those requirements. Did they tell you why? Congrats on getting into another school though!

When I attended the information session last fall, the dean of the nursing program said EAO is extended to applicants that “we love and want to accept just based on their application” (paraphrasing somewhat). Either way, this thread is making feel pretty discouraged.

We're in such a similar situation. I also was requested to re-take my anatomy. It was the same reason, that the board wouldn't accept it when it would come time to sit for the NCLEX. I took anatomy (human cadaver) through UCLA Extension, which was 1 quarter credit short of the board requirement for Western's program. I'm planning to re-take it currently at a community college. I felt hopeful to be in the early rounds given I was requested to show I would complete it by end of a Spring semester. Did you find somewhere to complete it? If not, I think some LACCD campuses still have space. I had a hard time finding one initially because I work full-time.

Why would the Board of CA not accept your course?

You may be able to do that at a community college but it would be 2 course I believe.

Omg I did both my anatomy and physiology courses at UCLA extension too! Maybe we were in class together; I did physio Summer 2018 and anatomy in Winter 2019.

I am doing both through Portage learning; Alberto said it's fine if I do them online. My only gripe is I need to redo both courses by the end of June, and I don't want to sign up yet unless I know for certain I'm getting an interview, or that I got in. Otherwise it's money wasted.

I work fulltime and I'm just tired of doing night school, so online will make it a little easier with my schedule.
