Westchester Community College FALL 2010 RN PROGRAM

Published

Just wondering if anyone is applying to the Fall 2010 RN program at WCC? Im curious to know what youve heard is the score you should obtain on the TEAS to gain entry into the program? At the Nursing seminar, we were told 85 or above and buy your scrubs but around campus Im hearing from students that they know of people who scored 90 and didnt get in.

ive gone to osbourne, northern westchester and phelps. you don't really have a choice, but they factor circumstances in if you live 5 minutes from 1 and an hour from another. the professors are reasonable, but once they make a decision thats where you are going.

you dont get to choose. the professors are reasonable about where you have to travel, but once you are assigned that is what you get.

When you say they factor in where you're commuting from, what does that mean? Do you mean the take an inventory of where all their students live before they choose a hospital for clinicals? Sorry for all the questions I just have so many!

Also, any advice/tips

you learned about anything along the way that you could pass on?

I just got my acceptance letter into WCC. I applied before the deadline and I got letter in the mail yesterday saying that I was only granted acceptance into the math and sciences liberal arts program. I called and the secretary said that they accept everyone into the math and science liberal arts program. She gave me Professor Whitely's number to call and i left him a voicemail. I got a 74.1 on the TEAS. I already have a BA in Psychology. Can anyone tell me if they think I will be accepted into the RN prgram. Thanks!

HI Bahagurl,

You most likely did not get into the RN program. Typically the lowest grade to get into the RN program at WCC is an 85. You may however be eligible to apply to the LPN program with a 74.

Can I ask you, how was the science on the TEAS? Can you give me any advice on what I should focus on?

focus heavily on the science section. lots of A and P. Math is very easy. So is english. A little physics. Good Luck1

bahagurl,

really? im suprised to hear that (about the A&P). I actually heard the opposite, that there were only a few AP questions and something about rocks! lol

WCCnursingperson, thank you so much for your valuable insight. I too am applying to the RN program and keep on hearing/reading all sorts of crazy stuff. I'm under the impression that we all heard the story of the one person who got a 90 and did not get accepted. It's starting to sound like an urban legend! There seems to be such fear amongst applicants that I think many of them psych themselves out. I did alright on the TEAS (high 80's), but because of all the rumors circulating the school, I doubt I'll be getting in. Apparently there were over 650 people taking the TEAS this year and only 56 seats available for the Fall. Basically, less than 10% of applicants will even be considered for the available seats and chances are that scoring in the 80's might not cut it. I did apply to the evening program, so that might improve my chances, but I'm not holding my breath.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but when and how were you notified of your acceptance? Are you currently taking other classes in addition to the nursing ones? Thanks again for all the info!!:)

There are so many rumors going around. Yesterday I heard over 800 people applied to the program. When I took the teas this spring at WCC, I was the only person taking the test. I also scored in the high 80s which put me in the 97 percentile. Going by years past anything over 85 and you made it into the program. All you can do is keep your fingers crossed.

Jake22,

When I took the exam I was one of two taking it. I did take it early on in March, but I've heard that over the past few weeks, the testing slots have been pretty packed. I even heard a girl threw up while taking hers and others left crying when they finished!! Who told you over 800 people had applied for the program? According to the receptionist in the Admissions Office, about 650 people registered to take the TEAS (as of Monday). I can't believe 150 registered in the last week alone! Also, doesn't the percentile rank change as more people take the exam? If you took the exam early on in the Spring, and did well, your percentile rank would be higher, but if you take it later on in the term, the same score would fall in the rankings... just wondering. Good luck getting into the program. Did you apply to the evening program or daytime one?

A woman I know who took the test on Thursday told me that the proctor of the exam said over 800 people applied. She also said she was told that there are only 30 spots for the day program and the evening program. As far as rank, I just checked my score again on ATI to see if my ranking changed and it did not. WCC does not look at your ranking anyway, they only care about your composite score. I confirmed this with a Professor Paisley. Very few people score over 90, nationally and in our area. If you go by history, and history repeats itself, anything 85 and over and you've made it into the program. I applied to the evening program. When I went to the seminar last fall, Dale Smith said a composite score of 80 was the lowest score that got into the evening program for Fall 2009. Best of Luck!

Wow, the rumors are getting crazier by the day! 800 people!? If thats true, then you now need to score in the TOP 4-5% to get into the program. It could very well be true. Enrolment at Community colleges and Nursing programs across the country are at a record high due to the recession so its very possible this is true but I would think that last year WCC would have seen an increase as well and when I went to the Nursing seminar in the fall, they said 85 for entry in the RN day, slightly lower for evening and that approx 465 took the test so something sounds off to me. Maybe the proctor who told you 800 people is talking about the entire COUNTY of Westchester? or maybe 800 people always register but only about 1/2 take the test? I do know alot of people who registered but got accepted to another school and are going there. Also, registration for the TEAS is closed after a certain date, its not like you can register whenever you want, I think it was a few week window if I remember correctly. In any case, I now feel like throwing up myself!
