I'm in west TN too!!! Up here in Martin. I don't graduate until May 2005 So glad to find others from Tenn on here!!! Hi all!!! :)
Wow, erslave, you work at the Med. How very interesting !! So how do you like it ?? I am very interested in the Med but am not a nurse yet and seems a little overwhelming even when I graduate from nursing school. By the way, is really true that all the staff members who work there have escorts to their cars ?? Just curious !!
Hi, Wanabe...I have learned more at the med in the last 2yrs than I did in the previos 9 yrs. Its a "teaching" hospital. The attending docs are always teaching residents (in every area of thehospital. ) You get to listen in and learn along with them. The docs (in general) are used to instructing and giving rational for what they are doing and why. ..they will explain any and everything to the nursing staff, also. I work in the Medicine emergency room (mi's, head bleeds, seizures, cva's..) as opposed to the trauma emergency room - who does traumatic injury to the body. Yes, there is security available to walk you to your car..Most of the hospital nsg staff get off at the same time and we all walk together. Our main population is homeless, cocaine users and prisoners who dont want to go to jail. Its really strange how people get "chest pain" when taken into custody. We call it "chrome induced ischemia" -chrome, meaning hand-
cuffs. The Med does hire nurse externs to work in different areas of the hospital. You should try getting on there...Its a great learning experience....Dont be scared of its reputation, though.
Good luck.
Hi, ERslave.
I saw your post about the Med from last January. I will finish LPN school in 6 weeks ! My goal has always been to become a nurse and work at the Med (I'm 32 y.o., it's just taken a while to become a nurse). In 1992, I was transferred to the Med as a high risk pregnancy and delivered my premature son. He stayed in the NICU for quite some time. The wonderful nurses I met while at the Med are the reason I've always wanted to be a nurse. So, now that it's almost time to finish this dream, I'm wondering if I'm really ready to work at a hospital this size. All of my clinicals have been done in Jackson, TN, in a hospital not nearly as big as the Med. Honest opinion, do you think this is the right place for a new graduate to try to start her career, or should I get some med/surg experience at a smaller hospital first? Thanks for your help!!
