West Coast University-Child Care

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello All,

I am getting ready to start West Coast University, Anaheim on 2Feb09. I was wondering if anyone has any advice or referrals of child care facilities that may be able to accomodate the schedule at this school. I really just need to cover until about 7pm until my husband gets off of work. Typically most child care centers close by 6pm. I don't need full time M-F, just enough to accomodate my changing school schedule. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great! Thanx.

Hi, I read your post and was curious about your classes. I am looking into going to the WCU in Ontario and doing their bachelors program. I have taken all pre-reqs for normal nursing programs and I am just sick of waiting to get into a program. How far in are you now and how is it going? Do you have any advice good or bad? How many days a week do you go to school? Did you have any classes completed prior to start WCU? Sorry for all of the questions, I am just really curious.

Thank you and good luck!!

Hi Jenbabe741,

Thats good that you have all the prereqs done, if you have taken them within the past 5 years you will get transfer credit for them. If not, you can still get credit if you decide to test out of them (take the final without prep or review --$100 fee) The classes are going well. I did not have classes to transfer and am going to test out of 3-4 classes. The classes are fast paced. Each class runs between 4.5 to 6 hours long- once a week- Treat Labs as a separate class and another day that you'll be in class. Just keep up with your studies, homework and attendance and you'll be fine. The class sizes are relatively small for prereqs. they run between 23-50 students.

So far, I am enjoying my time here at school. The counselors, deans and instructors have all been very welcoming and are reachable. What I mean by that is you can come and talk to them about anything (questions, expectations, help etc) at anytime. They have an open door policy. Main thing is, if you are confused or need help, speak up, ask someone- the instructor or classmate. If you can, try studying in groups, it gets the homework done much faster and its great to bounce ideas off of each other.

I am about 1/2 way in my first term (prereqs Anatomy and Written Communication). We are taking midterms this week. Some of the homework is busy work or what i like to call "forced study". I hope that helps you with your decision, perhaps we will be in a class together since you have so many of your classes done. Or perhaps you will be ahead of me and you can give me pointers later =D.

Thank you so much for the information. My biggest worry is cost, as I am sure everyone else's is. I would hate to try to pay that, but waiting to get into a nursing program is horrible. I am weighing the costs of doing this verusus working until I get into a program in probably 2 years and then not be done for another 2 years!! Its difficult but will be worth it in the end no matter what I decide!!

I have a call into the counselor about my pre-reqs. I would love to be able to knock off some of the terms to speed it up and cut the costs.

Again thank you for the information and I would love to hear how you are doing and any new info you come across.

Good luck!!

I am hoping for signing bonuses or loan repayment contracts once finshed with BSN. There are scholarships available for those who commit to working for medically underserved communities for 2 years ( i think up to $19,000 for loan repayment and $10,000 for scholarships) That can help some.

Yeah, I am hoping for that too. Luckily we are in a field that there are so many opportunities for scholarships and signing bounuses. I know Johnson & Johnson has a lot as well as Kaiser. Those are just two and there are a bunch more.

I didn't really think about loan repayment... Thank you for the idea.

I can't wait to go next week and get some of my questions answered. My biggest question is how many of my classes that I have previously taken can be transfered. Depending on that, I can cut time off and save money hopefully. We will see!!

Thank you again for all of your info, it has really helped.

I have a question, what are the general ed classes that you have to take throught West Coast? How many terms are these before the "real" nursing stuff starts? I am just curious to see how much I have taken already.

Thanks!

Jenababe - It is my understanding (and I am sure socalnursing student will know more as she is already attending) that the first 9 months are the "general ed" and then the nursing starts. It is fast paced... I am starting either in April or June (I was set to go in June and the admissions person called today to say they have a spot for April) Like the orginal poster I have children to consider and it is happening faster then I was mentally prepared for... I go in tomorrow at noon and will see what the first session schedule is...

I went yesterday and talked to the Admissions guy. I agree that this is all fast!! Did you hear anything about tuition increase? I am curious if this is just something they are saying to try to get me to sign up soon. I am supposed to go Sat. and take the HESI and then go back Monday or Tuesday for Financial Aid.

I did see the schedule and luckily I only need 5 out of the 13 pre-reqs, so that will help. After talking last night, he said I can start in June and begin the nursing part in Feb.

If you don't mind me asking, how are you paying. Are you just going to depend on Financial Aid and Private loans. That is my biggest issue because I am a single mom.

Thanks for your advice!! Good luck to you!

Being a single Mom it will be tough. I assume you will qualify for the PEL Grant but I think that will have to wait till next year now? I think the deadline was the beginning of March. Have you filled out your FSAFA online? I would begin with that.

I have money in a college fund for my 21 year old son who is not using it. So I rolled it into my name. But that only covers about 40% of the tution. I will have to do loans for the remaining amount .I am more worried about where I am going to get the money to pay for the childcare I need... that I am not currently paying for...

Are you planning on working?

I did not hear anything about the tution increase - but I am not surprised... they can charge it so they do. If that makes sense. The programs are so impacted all over...

I am paying almost the full pop of 116,000.00 - a little shy of that because I had a few pre-reqs.

I go today at noon to see if I am going to start now in April.

Keep us posted!

I am planning on working until the nursing classes start, from there we will see. It will be hard as a single mom, but luckily I do have the help of my parents as much as they can. I just look at it that I have to do this to make our lives a lot easier.

When I talked to Al Bond at WCU the other night, he said I might be able to trim off about 15-20k from the 116K total from the pre-reqs that I have taken. It is still A LOT!!! I would need a co-signer for the private loans and that is where my parents would come into play. Unfortunatley, my mother isnt liking the sales aspect of this school and is worried about the price, as we all are, so we'll see.

I want to go so bad, but I don't want to be in debt forever!!

I hope it works out - there is a sales aspect to the school - but just so you know, I contacted two different hospitals - Mission and Hoag and spoke with their HR nursing recruitment and they do hire from West Coast ... that helped me make my decision.
