Were you turned down?

I've noticed many members post threads about being granted an interview and being accepted into CRNA school. It seems many members of this forum are shoe-ins. So I'm wondering....

How many applications did it take before you were accepted?

How many years of trying?

How many schools did you apply to?

I know not every one can get in on their very first try, so come on, spill it.

5 years ICU (CCU/Trauma/Surgical experience)

Applied to seven programs and was granted interviews at all seven. Actually interviewed at one (my pie in the sky school) because of the flight interuptions 9/11 caused. I was accepted at my pie in the sky school, and subsequently never went to another interview.

I applied after one year of ICU experience which was my only RN experience as well. I applied to three schools. First one turned me down for an interview for last years class but just sent me a letter to interview for this year. Second school I applied to I interviewed at and was accepted. Third school I applied to I got an interview but turned it down because I was already accepted at my first choice school. I start in September.

Applied at one, put all my eggs into one basket, and got in. But I think I might of harrassed my way in................"let them in so they stop calling me type of thing"...haha :chuckle :chuckle

Two years of ICU experience, four years total RN experience, one application to one school, interviewed and was accepted. Start in August.

I think that you might be witnessing the wonder of what statisticians call "self selection bias" on this board. Go to South Beach in Miami and you might conclude that most Americans are fit and beautiful. However, many of the fat, less attractive people tend to avoid the beach. In the same way those who have repeatedly applied to and been rejected by CRNA schools may be less inclined to participate in CRNA discussion boards. In addition, there are many who "self select" and don't even bother to apply to CRNA school because they feel that they do not have a reasonable chance of success. However, even a drunken, homeless, unattractive, little person, might get a date with an attractive woman if he is willing to endure enough slaps in the face. Reminds me of joke. A man witnessed another man jump into lake Michigan flat on his face. After he helped the wet stranger out of the water he inquired "why did you jump in the water are you crazy?" The man replied matter of factly, "well a friend bet me a dollar at million to one odds that I couldn't jump lake Michigan and I figured at those odds I had to give it a shot!"

One year Burn/Trauma ICU. Applied to 7 schools rejected by 4, interviewed at three, accepted by 2, starting June 7th. Definately apply to several

3years CVICU experience applied to 2 got interviews at both and was selcted as an alternate on 1 and start this fall in the other.

I agree with Roland that this may be a skewed sample.

I have 9 years critical care nursing in Trauma/surgical ICU and flight nursing. I applied to 3 schools and was accepted to all 3 first year applying.

Applied to one school after 1 year RN experience in CTICU, interviewed, and accepted, start this fall. Guess I got lucky!

I applied to only one school after about a year and a half experience on a CTS ICU. I start this fall too (YAY!).

I see what you all are saying. It's similiar to the cigarette smoking issue. At my school it seems like a lot of people smoke. In reality only one out of every ten students smoke. Perception of cigarette smoking is skewed because smokers smoke in plain view of others, often at building entrances/exit. The smell and visual appearance of smokers stands out against non-smokers.

So maybe it seems that everyone who applies to CRNA school on this board gets accepted to CRNA school when in reality only one out of every ten posters gets in. Could it be that only those posting (the cig smokers) are only posting good news, nobody wants to talk about how they didn't get in. This forum is like the entrance and exit to building. Does this make sense or am I just blowing smoke?

I believe that this board helps people get into CRNA school!! Just last year, recently graduated from RN school, starting my PICU training I stumbled over this site looking for information on how to become a CRNA.

Initially I thought if I work hard for several years I might get in to a school down the road. In reading the threads of so many who applied and got accepted in one year I was surprised, but realized a new potential reality. My confidence and motivation kicked into gear to gather all of the necessary experience and other invaluable advice (provided by this board--Read Nilepoc's SRNA BLOG). Required reading to all wanna-be SRNA?CRNA's.

I hate to drag on but if your interested in becoming a CRNA revisit this board frequently and become an active participant in as many threads as possible. If nothing else you knowledge regarding the profession will expand, and this will prove quite valuable to you during your interview.

Overall, there are many personal perspectives that touch the different CRNA?SRNA caveats. There is som much I know now that I did not know a year ago. Good luck on your journey!-- P.S. Got into two schools with one year PICU experience. Starting Albany Med's NA program this fall. Good luck--jeff
