Weird, Odd Nurses Behavior.....

Nurses General Nursing

Published

As a nurse, and I guess a germaphobe at times, and just generally weird.....I have picked up on a few of my own rediculous behaviors that I guess I have managed to obtain through the years.

1. If drinking from a large open glass on the nurses unit. I cover the glass with a paper towel, put a straw through the top, and bend the straw not up, but down towards the ground..................why..........well, everybody knows germs fall from the sky and into things...like straws.... :chuckle

2. When opening a new can of pop, I wash it under the sink of running water, and then take a paper towel, all smushed up to a point, and go around the rim of the top of the can to get the dirt off, then open it and drink it.

3. I don't let food touch each other on my plate, and I only eat one thing at a time on my plate. I always finish one thing, and then move onto the next.

Anybody else share in this weirdness????????????????? :rotfl:

Me neither... I let the dog sleep with me, lick my face & eat off my plate. My cats run all over the work surface in the kitchen and I only object if they get to my food before I do! Have never even had a transient thought about bacteria on fruit/veg/handles. Couldn't give a toss about which foods touch on my plate. Dishes get thrown into the dishwasher (not rinsed) in any old random order... if they come out dirty, I might clean it by hand.... then again I might not! Haven't had a serious illness in my life & rarely get coughs/colds or D&V. Have never had flu (and dont get vaccinated either)

I'm careful about my patients because they are ill, so there is a very good reason.

Dont know how you all cope from day-to-day without dissolving ito some gibbering idiot...

I hate to use just any cup for my coffee. I have special cups (2) and I use them, no others. If you usea my cup I breaka you hand!

I usually rinse my silverwear under the hot water and dry it as I set the table. Yes, everyone has a full set of silver to use, every item has its own spoon or fork for obtaining a serving, if you poke your own utensil in the bowl, then you eat it all, or you leave the table.

Grace is said at meals, if you don't like grace then be respectful and keep quiet. If you talk or disturb others during grace, you leave the table.

Clearing the table is alternated when there is a gang here, yes, the men are expected to take their turns.

Funny, I never have trouble out of the grandkids over these rules, but the SIL's often need reminding. :wink2:

The dog can eat off of my plate if i'm done eating off of it.

However, i typically scrape my plate onto the dog food bowl.

Groc. stores in my area have put disinfecting wipes in several locations, including near the carts, so you can wipe the handles down. Love it! Now I don't have to shop w/ gloves on :chuckle .

In Toronto I've seen Purel placed in strategic places for everyone to use. There was even a sign at the entrance telling everyone to use some before continuing further into the hospital.

Good ideas to me!

yikes....that's pretty strict.

i guess everyone has their little idiosyncrasies.

personally i don't get people that let animals eat off of their plates or sit at or under the dinner table at meal times....especially seeing lots of pets eat their poop. ew.

my weirdness:

i don't like animals licking me. i don't care if it's my own or someone elses. yuck.

i wash my hands after petting animals.

i like clean dishes.

i wash my hands after using the toilet and before eating.

i wash my face daily, but can stand to shower every other day in winter. on the in between days i sponge bathe.

i don't like walking around the house barefoot, but i will walk around in socks.

i have a "no shoes allowed" home, unless they're indoor shoes (special pair of clean flip flops, for example).

i have swabbed my face with alcohol if a patient has ever coughed or sneezed in my face.

if i bathe instead of shower after leaving the hospital, i add a capful of clorox to my bath water.

This was Grandma's rule also.

Well, Control, like the line says, my rules go back to my great grandmother, she was very proper regarding manners. Seeing as how they have lasted for over 5 generations, they can't be that bad or that strict.

Marie, your granny and my granny were probably of the same generation. I know magic bleach was a staple in every kitchen. Of course, they had some serious diseases still floating around and needed to disinfect plates, utensils, bowls, and pots frequently.

Grandma always put a splash of bleach in the dishwater.

There was typically a splash of bleach everywhere. That's really all i remember her cleaning with. That and vinegar for the windows and Comet for the toilet. She thought Windex was a waste of money ("heck you can get a GALLON of white vinegar for $1.25!!").

But i also remember her house smelling very clean and fresh.

OK, here's my wierdos:

1) I love to read horror and murder mystery books, but I cannot watch a horror movie.

2) Even in the dead of winter in Michigan, I have to sleep with my ceiling fan on, at least on low.

3) I cannot fall asleep unless I am laying on my right side.

4) I have to take report in red pen. Labs need to be highlighted in yellow.

5) When I come home from work in the morning, before going to bed, I have to play 3 games of hand-held Yatzhee.

OK, call me strange. :rotfl:

What a great thread? I guess I'm kinda wierd too:

1. I will order a sandwich or hamburger and take a couple bites...then I HAVE to remove all the meat and just eat the rest in sections...Example: take a couple bites of turkey sandwich, remove turkey and discard, eat each piece of bread separately, then the veggies in side and the cheese.

2. If I order a salad with lots of goodies in it...like roasted chicked pieces. I will push all the chicken to the side, eat the whole salad, then eat the chicken at the end. I do the same thing with choc chip cookie dough ice cream! Eat the dough last.

3. If someone sneezes around me at a restaurant, I also don't breathe their sneezed air! I will even move to another spot if I can.

I know i have a million more!! Can't think of them right now.
