Ok this is for all my beautiful ladies and gentlemen. What are your eating habits while in nursing school? How do you keep from gaining weight and eating unhealthy? I am so afraid that I am going to gain a ton of weight while in school and I just want some good advice on some healthy eating habits. FYI I am not much of a very healthy eater right at the moment and im trying to watch what I eat, oh yeah im not big on vegetables:banghead:, but I love fruit.

Thanks again, and I can't wait to get all of your advice.

Any fitness program that you can make a consistent part of your lifestyle and that has/shows benefits to you, and that does not cause undo stress or injuries is, in my opinion worthwhile.

19 bucks a month with no clauses, sounds good, if you use it. And that's the key.

I would go with the gym membership if you can afford it. Sometimes it's better to get out of the house to exercise to get a change of scenery. Also, I used to obsess about being sugar-free this, and sugar-free that, and I always craved cakes, and pastries and that's the foods that I would binge on!! lol Now that I use more regular sugar in moderation instead of all the sugar substitutes, I've found that my cravings are much better. Just an aside to think about!

oh i absoultey cannot do sugar free i try to read my labels and everything. I always look at the sodium content because my family has a history of high blood pressure and right now I don't have it, and I want to try and eat healthy so that I don't get it. I really want to join the gym but I would only be able to go twice a week when im not working.

I am in school Mon-Thurs from 8:30-2:30 and then at work by 3 and work until 10pm so i don't have much time to go to the gym except on my weekends off which is every other weekend. But I guess I can try anything once, to see how it works.

Wow!! I wish I could lose weight during school!! Mostly everyone I've seen go through the program I'm in now has gained weight.

I can imagine that added stress also contributes to the weight gain. Plus when you're on the go between work and school and family and homework... Who has time to plan out the calories and exercise?

I wish I could spend more time at the gym, but it just isn't as high priority as work and schoolwork, so unfortunately it gets pushed aside sometimes.

I don't know what your schedule is like, but I'd say to NOT be like me and MAKE time to care about your health!!

it will be hard to me to find time to go to the gym. That's why im just trying to make some plans early, i just want to be able to stick to something. Do some of you guys view excerise as a weight to relieve some stress from all the craziness of nursing school?

Definitely, and I'm trying the crack of dawn routine. I'd rather get it over with and out of the way as early as possible. It's a real struggle because I am not a morning person!!!

Tell me about, I am a huge night owl I don't know how in the world I am going to be up by 6am and in class by 8:30am but I guess once i get use to it, it will be a breeze.

I really didn't find exercising a stress reliever. In fact, I'd rather be doing some else than exercising. But, I have come to make it a habit after forcing myself to go even when I didn't want to. It's all about discipline. One interesting thing for me is that the quality of my studying was actually better at the gym than at home. I would bring my nursing texts, jump on the elliptical, turn up the classical music on my ipod, and do that for two hours non-stop while reading my nursing text. Knocking out 1500 calories while studying isn't so bad.

The Wii fit is a novel idea if you seriously use it, but it's really hard to not become distracted working out at home.

I used to DDR for a great cardio workout at home, but I never saw the results.

In the beginning I gained weight because I was so stressed about being a 4.0 student. Now that I'm ok with a 3.0 I have lost 30 pounds and I graduated today. Now the weight gain for boards begins! But seriously, I go to the gym at least 4 days a week and I eat healthy snacks only and drink water. LOTS OF WATER. You can do the add ins. But the exercise and water and watching the over eating. It's not called a diet, it's a lifestyle change. GOOD LUCK!!!:wink2:

wow dbacon congrats on the weight lose and graduation. So may I ask what kind of healthy snacks did you eat?

I know this sounds time consuming, prepare your meals at home. Don't eat fast food or junk food. Take time for yourself. And don't eat because your stressed out (the biggest factor) Remember what you put in your mouth, goes to your hips. Take all the nutritional info they provide you at school and apply it. And most importantly....when you actually start nursing....stay away from the food at the nursing station....not only will you not gain more weight when you start working....you will avoid all the cdiff, vre, mrsa etc. Not everyone practices good hand hygiene. Think about what your actually ingesting (and Drs are the worst!!!!!)

wow really good information. I work in a hospital now and not in patient care but I see this kind of thing happen all the time, where people come from the bathroom and don't wash their hands, and then go and stick their hands in someones bag of chips etc.
