wearing makeup to work?

Nurses General Nursing

Updated:   Published

I am still in nursing school and I usually always wear makeup when I'm out most of the time like a "full face of makeup" not like a clown or anything weird and over the top haha but I usually always wear foundation, concelar, eye liner, mascara, a little bronzer niti have always thought it would be kind of pointless to wake up every day or everyother day (whatever my work schedule will be) and put on a full face of makeup when I'm going to be running around a hospital all day, helping people to the bathroom, giving baths, doing charts, giving meds etc. but I still feel like when I'm a nurse I dont want to look like a total bum either like I just rolled outa bed with no makeup on (because that is never a good look when I'm pale because I havent tanned or I'm beyond tird that day). I know I am not going to want to put on a ton of makeup everyday when its just going to rub off , sweat off etc.

I just dont want to look sloppy infront of patients, their familys, other co workers, or bosses.

Do you wear makeup to work as a nurse?

If so, what do you wear to keep it simple?

Do you think its silly to put makeup on in this type of profession when we are just running around non stop?

Also, how do you make yourself look put together when it comes to usually always havng your hair up a lot of the time?

I wear makeup daily. nothing over the top, no lipstick. most nurses/PCTs that I work with also wear makeup. Here is a quote regarding make from AOL jobs: 10 make-up sins not to commit at work-

[h=5]4. Not wearing enough makeup or going bare-faced to work.[/h] Some ladies believe if you wear too much makeup you won't be taken seriously. You don't need to wear a lot -- some powder, mascara and lipstick are the three go-to items to make it through the workday. But don't show up to the office with nothing on your face -- save that look for lunch hour at the gym.

Let me see if I can answer your questions. I don't wear any make-up at work. Of course i don't wear any make-up at any time. In fact my family would have me 1013'd to a facility if I did. Hair: I don't put it up. Unless it falls off and I have to put it back up on my head. I tried to glue it back on one time but it didn't work. So I don't bother putting my hair up. When I was 20 and a new grad I had shoulder length hair. I didn't put it up then either.

Oh, by the way, I am a male. This wasn't a female only post was it? LOL!

I wear makeup everyday I go to work and almost all the time in public. Many people would be better off appearance wise doing the same. For work I do concealer, foundation, sometimes powder, eyelinger occasionaly(light brown only, nothing black or other color for work), neutral eyeshadows like light browns or beige, mascara, and clear lip gloss. It wears off fast when you are running around and in and out of isolation gowns. It does not usually last the whole shift at least not the foundation etc.

I dont need to wear foundation because I have a nice, flawless skin and also because I dont want to "destroy" my face.I have seen what foundation make up has done to people faces (their face is so used to make up that they look terrible without it:(((((( I rather keep my natural look so I dont have to worry what I look without make up,although sometimes I do wear mascara,lipstick,eye-shadow.More for fun-trying out different colors of make up or for party:)

Good for you and your great skin, seriously. Not everyone has a face that was better off before foundation, believe me.

As my world is nothing but blue blue blue conformity, with my hair secured under a standard issue blue bouffant or tied up under a men's scrub cap (lemme tell ya, that takes some doin'), the only two places I have to work with to find and embrace my individuality are my shoes and my makeup.

Granted, I have a veritable bevy of strange and wonderful shoes I wear at work: everything from leopard print rain boots to Breast Cancer Support blushing pink Danskos. But even on the best of days, that little bit just isn't enough to scratch my itch.

You see, once upon a time, in a land far, far away, in the trembling light steeping through the tree canopy, snuggled near a babbling brook, there dwelled CheesePotato Smurf. And CheesePotato Smurf was not like Brainy Smurf, who was content to be smart, or Hefty Smurf, who took comfort in his great strength, or Grouchy Smurf, the token crabass, or even Smurfette, the resident whore smurf. No, CheesePotato Smurf was not like her fellow brother and sister blue people. She never wanted to be a blue person, let alone three inches tall. She was dark, cynical, and craving individuality.

One day she was skipping through the woods/OR (tra la la la la laaaaa, la la la la laaaaaaa) when there, nestled near her locker, she came across a treasure chest. Casting worried looks about her, she eased forward and reached out a tentative, trembling hand to touch the glimmering box which beckoned to her with the sweetness of a siren song. As her worried blue fingertips grazed the material of the box there was a glow, sting and snap! Then darkness.

She awoke several moments later in a daze. As she stumbled to the bathroom mirror, muttering curses and threats to cows and winged lizards everywhere, she froze when faced with her own reflection--she was changed.

About her eyes a strange war paint had appeared, marking her upper eyelid with winged, black, fluid strokes. Her eyelashes curled upward and fanned across her muted, hue toned upper lids. She no longer looked like her brothers and sister Smurfs. She was unique. She was marked and ready for battle--her icy stare over the lip of her traditional face mask garb made more prominent.

Whether she cared to admit it or not, the other Smurfs looked at her a little differently that day and perhaps the "strange ones"...the ones wearing light green paisley printed tunics and hooked up to all sorts of strange and magical tubes...actually smiled a little more easily at her.

So it is that each and every day, CheesePotato pays visit to the special box by her locker, though no longer with trepidation, and embraces the change that overtakes her each day. It is never the same, but it has now become routine to be different.

And different, CheesePotato Smurf agrees, is good.

Just eyeliner and mascara on the top lid for me!

Oh, heck yeah...are you kidding me? Most definitely I will wear makeup to school and on the job.

I'm one of those types of women who "need" makeup to look presentable, and thats putting it nicely. Do I feel I need to wear it everyday? No, not necessarily. But, I do sure feel better when I have it on, and I feel like myself. Yes, there are days I go without wearing it in public, and most times when I am at home I do not wear it. If I have somewhere to go and something to do that day, you betcha I'll be wearing makeup. Basically, I am not a prisoner to my cosmetics and routine but I'm sure many would love to lock me up for the days when I'm not wearing any. :lol2:

I've always been a lover of anything makeup and skincare. I started wearing makeup when I was 13 (just concealer for blemishes, mascara, and lipgloss) At 16, I was allowed the above, plus blush and "light/minimal" eyeshadow. By my twenties, I was wearing it all. I've always worn makeup tastefully. During my teens, I was a believer that less was more. Now, at age 38 that belief has changed somewhat with aging. Just a little more concealer here, and a bit more mascara there. Matte eyeshadows have become my new BFF. (You KNOW what I'm talking about ;))

Anyways, for nursing and school as long as makeup is done tastefully and kept in check, I don't see a problem with it. I think, depending on where I work, and what unit/specialty I am in will determine how much of what I will wear. I wouldn't wear to school/work what I would normally wear on an evening out-on-the-town. No, wild colors or dramatic eye-looks. I love my cut-creases, and dark outer-Vs, and smokey lids, but I seriously do not want to come off as some little twit "tart".

Here's a run-down of what I would wear to school/work and just an every day look:

Primer: Necessary. I want my makeup to stay on and stay put. Smashbox makes an excellent one.

Foundation: My skin is not flawless so most definitely I'll be wearing some. I prefer a matte or natural matte finish with medium coverage. Staying power and long-wearing is the key. I prefer something that doesn't transfer or melt off of my face after 6+ hours, or requires alot of retouches. Examples: Estee Lauder Double Wear, Maybelline SuperStay 24 hour, MAC Pro Longwear

Concealer: Necessary. Mostly for under eye circles. I have tried many but I am still looking for my "Holy Grail" concealer. I currently use MAC Pro Longwear and enjoy it.

Powder: Mainly to set concealer. With a light-hand I use sparingly. The foundations I use do dry somewhat matte and don't need powder. I don't like cakey-face.

Eyebrows: Necessary. I like well-groomed brows. Don't neglect the brows, they are important to the face. Pluck, wax the wild hairs but leave the rest alone! Over-plucking is the death of the brow. I use MAC's Eye Brows Crayon in Lingering to fill-in my brows and MAC Omega eyeshadow (matte) to set it.

Eyeshadow Primer: Necessary. If you're wearing any eyeshadow at all, you don't want it to crease, and cake-up in your eyelid crease. I also prefer an eyelid primer which will neutralize eyelid discoloration (redness, veins) My favorite is Urban Decay Primer Potion. Others worth mentioning: MAC Paint Pots, Too Faced Shadow Insurance

Eyeshadow: Neutrals. Colors like vanilla, cream, beige, tans, brown, muted-gray, muted-taupe. No bright colors. I prefer matte shadows for everyday wear. As for brands, anything goes. I enjoy both drugstore and high-end brands.

Eyeliner: Black. Always black. I like a winged, cat-eye eyeliner as long as its subtle and not too extended. I use both liquid eyeliner or a gel/cream eyeliner for my upper lash line, always black. I rarely use an eyeliner below my lower lash line for everyday wear, its just too harsh. However, I do line my lower waterline (inner rim) with a flesh-colored eyepencil. It brightens up my eyes and is less severe than a white eyeliner. I prefer: Tarte's emphasEYES inner rim brightner, and Stila's Kaja eyeliner in Topaz. Chanel also makes one in Clair, and MAC Pro has one in Chromographic NC15/NC20. As for upper lashline eyeliner I enjoy: L'oreal Lineur Intense Liquid eyeliner in Carbon Black, MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, and Wet N Wild's Mega Eyes Creme Eyeliner in Black (the one in the pot).

Mascara: Black. Always black. I really like Maybelline's XXL PRO Extensions in Very Black.

Eyelashes: Natural looking ones, if I decide to wear them that day. Nothing too dramatic, full, or long. Both Ardell and Revlon make some really natural-looking falsies. Most days I skip this and just stay with mascara.

Eyeshadow-Looks: For every day wear, I enjoy the "pin-up" look. Its classic and its easy. I normally wear a light color (vanilla or cream shade) on the eyelid, and a (beige or soft-brown) in the crease, blended well. My highlight/browbone color normally is the same shade I used for my eyelid, a vanilla or cream color. To top it off, I enjoy a subtle, black winged eyeliner and black mascara. I do like to use a flesh-colored eyepencil on my lower waterline (inner rim). On some days, I will only resort to only wearing a wash of one color on my eyes, eyeliner and/or mascara. Depending on how rushed I am or how I'm feeling that day.

Blush: Pink, Peach, and Nude shades or bronzer. Nothing too bright or dark. I love Tarte, MAC, and NARS blushes.

Bronzer: Mostly used for contouring under the cheeks, under the jaw, and down the neck. If I'm using a sunless tanning lotion, I may lightly powder around the edges of my face and down the T-zone. I prefer: NYC bronzer in Sunny and Too Faced bronzer in Chocolate Soleil.

Highlighter: I normally skip a highlighter. If my blush has a shimmer to it, definitely skip this step. I don't like appearing too shiny or sparkly during the day, and cannot justify using a highlight for daywear. I just do not find it necessary for during the day. At night, yes. But, I'm not going discuss it for daily wear.

Lipliner: I normally try and match my lipliner to whatever lipcolor I will be wearing. I personally do not mind if my lipliner shows a little bit, as long as its not too dark or too thick. I like a well-defined lipline. I don't always fill in my whole lip with lipliner, just the edges and perimeter or my mouth. I prefer NYX and MAC lip pencils best.

Lipstick: Creams, satin, and frost finish/formula lipsticks. I hate...hate...HATE, matte lipsticks and lipstain lipsticks. If I'm going to wear something shimmery or frosty, this is wear I'd put it. I love various muted and natural shades of pinks, rose, mauve, nudes, beige lipstick colors and whatever is in between. NO dark or bright colors, plums, berry, wine, or reds for daywear. I don't care what season or month it is, I won't use them for the day. Thats just my personal preference. I have a serious issue with the smell and taste of lipsticks and lipglosses. So, I am particularly picky when it comes to the brand I am using. For that reason, I mainly only wear MAC lipsticks. I love Blankety, Plastique, Creme D'Nude, Fleshpot, Siss, Pretty Please, Politely Pink, and Creme Cup are some of my MANY favorites.

Lipgloss: Cream and frost finish/formula glosses. Again, MAC only. Lately, I've been rocking Casual Air, Oyster Girl, Outer Space, Sugarrimmed, C-Thru, Oh Baby, Underage. I don't always wear lipgloss, I have my days I can go without it.

Perfume: I skip it. Definitely, skip it when in clinicals in school. I won't be wearing perfume to work. Too many people are sensitive to smells. What you may find pleasing to your sense of smell, may offend others. Its too risky. I do like perfume and body sprays but I don't wear them to school or work. Of course, I wear deodorant but that is different.

Nails: I do not wear nail polish to school, work, or clinicals. No fake nails either. I keep my nails short and groomed.

I know it sounds like I wear alot of makeup, but really I don't. Everything is tastefully applied and natural looking. I like appearing well-put together, and makeup allows me to do that. I do feel better when I'm made-up and it shows. I like my routine of applying it and getting ready for the day or night. I don't believe my decision to wear makeup or not has seriously altered anyone's opinion of myself. The person will like me for who I am, or not, regardless to what is on my face. I wear it because I enjoy it.
