OK, we got in, but now what? I am a detail orientated person and I want info! When can I start picking up things I need? What are those items?
I have really lost it! I went from thinking about getting in to wondering what to do/what to read/what to buy before class starts.
And how big of a backpack do we REALLY need?
Anybody out there from CLC have any advice? Help me before my family moves out of the house permanently (wait...maybe that would be a good thing:devil:)!
Off topic, but has anyone ever fried a turkey??
Yep! We have. After my mom died my dad had a job transfer that moved him down to Georgia where he met his current wife. We've had many fried turkeys down there on many Thanksgivings and have made them ourselves up here several times (including one about 4 Thanksgivings ago in the SNOW!).
What do you need to know?
No, I am having the same problem. I was hoping it wasn't just me. I am alittle upset, though. Even if we cannot buy we should be able to see the book list. They don't want us to know, they want us to buy from them and not look around for cheaper. The longer they withhold the book list, the less time we have, with shipping, to get our books on time, hence, we have to buy from them. This is my own theory. I really would like the book list, also.

Historically speaking, the bookstore list will be completely inaccurate, so even once you can see it, you should use the list in the handbook instead. I was a spring start and purchased almost all of my books prior to January.
Colleen - We are going to try and fry that turkey on Xmas. Is it pretty much follow the instructions and everything will be groovy? I still laugh about the last Xmas turkey. I have an issue with "food with a face", so putting my hands in a turkey is not on my list. So last year I volunteered Carolyn (my daughter). She's shoving her hands up a hole and remarking that "at least it's not the ***hole"! She can't find the gibblets so all of a sudden I hear her yell "where's the God da** gibblets"! After she finally found them, she sits the turkey up and realizes that she had her hands in the butt the whole time. She drops the turkey in the sink and yells "I was in his **shole, I was in his **shole"! All of this on what is supposed to be a relaxing Xmas day. So, turkeys kinda scare me :chair: - last year was the first one I made, and now I'm frying one?!? What's wrong with me??
As far as the bookstore online - I agree. A year ago the ISBN #'s could be found online. Then they took them off. I was told it was cuz they want you to buy books from them. I guess we should be happy though - some schools have the books out of reach so you can't jot the #'s down. The handbook has the #'s in it though.
What a funny story! And I can totally see Carolyn freaking out like that. What a riot.
We might do our turkey a little different than some, just because my step family in the south was doing it LONG before it became popular up here (they've got a special kettle they cook it in, though we just use a traditional turkey fryer here).
The thing is not to get too large of a turkey, and to make sure not to fill the pot too full of oil. We typically fill the pot about halfway full of water first. Then take the turkey (still in its packaging) and lower it down into the water. You're trying to find out the displacement factor (how high the water level will rise once you put the turkey in). This gives you a good idea how much oil you can fit in. Remember, when you drop the turkey into the hot oil it will bubble like crazy, so you need to make sure the oil level isn't too high or you will have a fire. Keep a fire extinguisher handy, and remember NEVER put water on a grease fire!!! (Don't ask - let's just say I learned the hard way once!)
We make a marinade that gets injected into the turkey. I've seen several injectors at Linens N Things or Bed Bath & Beyond, but they are kind of wimpy and tough to use. Down south they use a hog syringe (I am NOT kidding!). The first time we had the fried turkey my stepmom took my sisters and I to the "Feed Store" so that we could get our own hog syringes to take home. That was prior to 9/11 - can you imagine trying to take one of those on a plane now? They are way scary looking!
So the turkey gets injected with the marinade the night before. Then before you cook him he gets slathered with a mixture of mayonaisse and yellow mustard. Then sprinkle him really liberally with season salt, garlic powder and lemon pepper. Sounds kind of strange, but this gives him a really flavorful skin (yeah, I know you're not supposed to eat that part!!).
I'd be happy to give you the complete recipe, and if you need to borrow any of our equipment I'd be happy to lend it to you. Not a problem!!
Hello Everyone!!
It's been awhile since I have been here but was hoping those of you who have already purchased your 171 modules could give me an idea of what they are about. I won't be able to get mine until after orientation and I really want to know what to expect the first few weeks....Thanks
ok - here's a silly question...what do we bring with us on orientation day? handbook? book bag? any textbooks? anyone out there been there/done that yet?
anyone take a look at module aa? dimensional analysis? i was great until i looked at that part. my 16-year just learned about it in hs ac chemistry. does anyone know if we are given the conversion charts when tested on this stuff? thanks....

bring the handbook, a pen, monetary payment for drug test (i think it's $30) and a full bladder.

a plain white shirt can be worn under the blue uniform top. at some point this semester, one of my instructors commented that the white shirt had to be short-sleeved, but i saw plenty of students wearing long-sleeved turtlenecks. i'd check with staff about sleeve length.
