We got into the CLC Nursing program...now what

Published

OK, we got in, but now what? I am a detail orientated person and I want info! :lol2: When can I start picking up things I need? What are those items?

I have really lost it! I went from thinking about getting in to wondering what to do/what to read/what to buy before class starts.

And how big of a backpack do we REALLY need? :uhoh3:

Anybody out there from CLC have any advice? Help me before my family moves out of the house permanently (wait...maybe that would be a good thing:devil:)!

Specializes in Cardiac ICU.

i just called clc bookstore to find out what was in the bundle but the girl that answered the phone didn't know. she did say, however, that books will not be available for purchase until the 2nd week of december and i could check then about the bundle.

Ugh!!! So, much for my last trip to Vegas before classes....Oh,well , I guess I would much rather spend my money on my books. They last longer:o

Happy Thanksgiving

First off...Thanksgiving was great...food was delicious!! And Black Friday shopping today - success!!!

I know...I am not getting financial aid again this semester - no surprise there, but my in-laws were asking for ideas for me. I told them I would much prefer money since the cost for Nursing classes, books and supplies will be so much...every little bit will help! We shall see...was just thinking we'll more than likely have to pay quite a bit for shoes and many other things I am not even thinking of. Ugh! :uhoh21:

We just got back into town after visiting my parents in Arkansas (or Are...Kansas as my son says). I hope everyone had a great Turkey Day!!

Heather - I am so glad you got into the Section you were hoping for. I think I would have has a heart attack. In fact, I just tried to get onto CLC to print out my schedule and their site is down for updates until Saturday. Boo Hoo!

I think all these little things we need are going to add up to big $$$! I need to order new shoes for work, so I think I may look for a pair that also comes in white. That way if I like them for work - I can just order them in white for school. I also plan on starting to put a few dollars a week away for stuff from my tips - every little bit helps.

Hi everyone,

I'm Vicki and will be in section 1 as well. I have been reading all of the information you all have posted and it has been very helpful.

I was hoping that someone who is already in the program would give me some idea as to how many books you really need to haul around all the time.

I bought a 17" rolling tote at Kohl's that has 3 compartments. Two of them are larger- will hold 2-3 books, (maybe 4 depending on size) and a couple of notebooks probably. The 3rd compartment is smaller on the front that would not hold large books, but definately would hold notebooks, smaller books, water, snacks, etc. From what I understand, you need about a 3" binder for just the modules.

Any input would be appreciated.

Vicki

hi vicki, you'll have the same instructor that i have right now. she'll tell you which book(s) you'll need to bring for class ahead of time. for example, before you have lab she'll tell you to bring your clinical procedures book because there is something in that particular book that you'll be working on. or, if you have lecture she'll tell you before hand to bring your psych book because the topics covered are mainly in that book. i also have a rolling backpack and brought my potter and perry book (the "bible" and it's big) to every class. there are only 2 days a week that you go to clc and the other day is out in woodstock. if you don't have a particular book that day in class someone else will have one and your 10 person section will be very close knit after a couple of weeks. i see these people more often than anyone else! for clinical day you will probably take a clipboard, your folder to turn in from previous week, whatever module packet your working on, and your drug handbook (it's pretty small), but again, there are drug books in the nursing station too. you don't need to carry around all of the modules and she'll tell you this. it's a waste of energy trying to do this because you rarely need to go back into another module once you've completed the letter series. for instance, i'm currently working on my "d" module and there are 2 packets for that...d1 and d2. you'll figure it out real quickly what you need to carry with you. you'll be fine. the centegra system is really nice and accomodating and most of the nurses are really nice and willing to help.

good luck and let me know if you have anymore specific questions.

Ok, so do you think the bundle pack is the way to go? Does that just include all of those books in one pack?

Awesome information and THANKS for taking the time to post it!

Looks like the bundle is required by CLC, so I don't know if we have an option to get it or not... Maybe if you found the same books used online or something, but I think I remember hearing on this site that they were going with new versions of many of the books anyhow.

Also, I remember someone on here suggested that we wait to buy the books until after the orientation session. They will give us a list then of what is required, and what is optional. Many times we're going to want the optional books I'd bet, but there's no sense going out and breaking the bank on everything now before we know for sure... Just my thoughts.

Hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving. We put up all of our Christmas decorations this past Saturday before my daughter went back to school. I am really getting into the holiday spirit now!!!

I'm not planning to run out and get them now, but just trying to plan.

So, I think I am confused. The bundle of books...are those the same as all the books that are listed as single items, except in a bundle? Or is that bundle actually different books and then you also have to get the other required books? Just not sure... :uhoh21:

I'm sure we'll find all of that out in Orientation, but like I said, just trying to plan ahead!!! I have to fork out the money out of pocket for tuition and books (no more tuition reimbursement and no loans/financial aid), so I have to make sure I plan ahead for this!!!

Thanks all,

Lori

I could be wrong, but I think the bundle pack is in addition to the required books. CLCstudent posted above about Potter and Perry and that's not listed, so either we don't need the "Bible" or it's in the bundle. The bundle and some of the others are all listed as "required", plus the total price is close to last years total.

Anyone excited to get a stethoscope? My son keeps asking if he can get me one for Christmas! :chuckle He saw a cute one at the doctor's office when he broke his arm. It was an UltraScope or something. I guess you can get ladybugs, smiley faces, dragonflys, etc. A lot of posters on allnurses like it. I told him to wait, but I don't know if he can! He's a bit excited!! :yeah:

Diedra:Present1:

I know...I know! I am crazy:uhoh3:, but did anyone notice that for NUR 171 there are still openings??

Section 1 has 3

Section 2 has 7!!

Section 5 has 2

What's with that??

LOL Diedra! I confess - I just checked too! I cannot believe there are still open spots. If they stay open that's definitely good news for some people who are SOOO close to getting in!

I'd agree with you on the books. To me it looks like that Bundle is in addition to the other stuff. And Lori, I totally understand what you're talking about as far as wanting to plan ahead. Me too!!! Don't you just want to start already?!? It's so hard for me to remain focused this late in the semester anyhow, and now we've got all this fun to look forward to!

I bought a combo set with the stethescope and BP cuff they have down in the CLC bookstore (I think it was $35 for the set with a little pouch to carry in - very similar to the sets we used in lab). I actually bought it the day we did BP in the lab because I couldn't hear a stinkin' thing in the lab that day and wanted to practice more. I think I must've been using a defective set in lab, because I bought this new set and I was able to do it just fine. Now all my friends, family and neighbors know that when they come over I WILL check their BP. ;-)
