Wayne State University

Anyone know anything about Wayne States nursing program. I know that they don't have a wait list they are GPA to be admitted. I was just wondering if anyone had gone there or if anyone was going there. Thanks for any input in advanced.

Malenurse: Commute. By all means. As long as you have a car, I would say live free and spend your $$ on gas instead of rent.

Katie- I can't really think of any great advice, other than keep yourself organized, make friends with your clinical groups, and remember that all of these semesters build on each other. Sort of like 4 semesters of cumulative exams.

Oh, and don't procrastinate. :imbar Now, back to work for me!! LOL

I'm thinking that since my mom is a nurse it may be that much more promising to live with them for a while so she can help me get through some stressful times... I just really never thought I would be living with my parents again, its really kind of weird.... :)

Oh man Charles that makes your decision so much easier! With your mom you have a built in study partner to answer any questions you have. And even though you might feel weird about moving back in with them it's not forever just 16 short months while you're in school.

If you did want to find others to maybe rent a house with orientation might be a good place to meet people and see if any are in the same situation. Or you could check craigslist and see if anyone is looking for roommates but I still think the best bet is to live for free if you can.

Congrats to all who got into the nursing programs. :yeah: I will be joining you all hopefully next fall once I get my pre-reqs finished. I can't wait to start WSU this fall and get moving forward again, having the spring and summer off has been great to get to spend with my children but I am so ready to get going again and I still have time to go. Man summer hurry and get over with I want to get this done. WaynestateKatie congrats and I am so happy for you. Kimberly

Thanks so much Kimberly. What prereqs are you signed up for this fall and who is teaching them? There are a lot of switch ups in the bio dept (teachers for micro and A&P) and the ones teaching in fall are easier than the profs who traditionally teach those classes which is good news for you! Maguire is doing chem 1000 too and he's a great guy. Man I wish I had all the profs that are slated for this fall when I was doing prereqs...

Enjoy your summer off with your kids it will be over before you know it:eek:

I know my pros and cons list is pointing sharply in the Wayne State direction!!! Did anyone recieve their letters yet? I'm just wondering when the orientation meetings are....

Hi malenurse,

i too got into OU but it's going to be untill the fall of 09, a year away!!!!!!!! hey have you taken the NUT, Patho and Pharm classes and who did you have? planning on taking Phil and patho in the fall, and nut and pharm in the winter. may travel overseas in Dec so i am working real hard to save for that. can i buy your textbooks if you don't need them anymore?

Hi Kale1, I haven't taken those three pre-reqs yet... I was waiting to see where I was going for sure... I didn't want to waste the money at OU if I didn't need them..... And I'm pretty sure I'm going to WSU in the fall, all signs in my pro's con's list are pointing at WSU.... :) Good luck to you though, maybe with me droping out of the OU program it will bump you or someone else up a semester!!!

Congrats, Waynestatekatie, malenurse734, & israfeel!!

You will now have a love/hate relationship with the CON. ;) So happy you got in/so consumed with tough classes.

malenurse- I wouldn't sweat it re: the attrition rate for CD2. Some of those numbers have transitioned into the traditional program. They're still in nursing, just not the CD2 program. Keep in mind, the only thing you can control is your own college career. You are the one who can study hard, manage your time well, and seek help if you are not doing well. Some people realized that the fast pace wasn't what they liked, and that's fine. That doesn't make them failures.

I don't know anything about Oakland's program, but if you have any Q's about the CD2, I could probably answer those. Welcome to the program!!

Thanks! I think I am going to go the Wayne State and am getting pretty excited about it... I didn't realize that some of those students actually transitioned into the traditional program... Is that an option for every student if they realize the CD2 isn't for them?

Also does WSU use ATI testing for each of the different topics covered throughout the program? I know OU does.... And was wondering how the pass rates were for your program?

Thanks again for the valuable tidbits of info, it helps my parasympathetic nervous system greatly :)

Question for SCaregiver or anyone in the program now..... Do you use PDA's for anything, I am getting ready to buy one and was curious if there is a certain one that is recommended and/or required??

I didn't get mine yet but for CD2 your orientation will either be June 24 or 26 depending on where your name is in the alphabet (what it says on the website). Mine is the beginning of July for the traditional. They're fast approaching!

I'm probably getting my actual paper letter by tomorrow since they went out a couple days ago...

No PDA here. I know a classmate or two who have them, but they're certainly not required. Or necessary, really. There are a few pocket guides which are probably good enough.

HTH!

****If you don't get a 75% in either the clinical or theory part of a class, you can't move on. That's not to say you can't retake a class, but you can't continue with the CD2s. You have to work it out with OSA to go traditional, but I don't know of anyone who wanted to who was refused.

****I have no idea what ATI testing is. Wayne *does* do the HESI exam- it's supposed to be predictive of your success on the NCLEX.

No problem! A year ago, I was in your shoes... :D

I use a PDA for one reason...EPOCRATES!!!! It is a free download and gives you the most recent info on all drugs. The docs I work with turned me on to it years ago. It is much easier to quickly find the drug you need info on (you enter the first few letters of the name, either generic or brand and voila. The other thing is it is always in your pocket, not so big and bulky as a drug book. I also keep lab values, ABG interpretations and other such tools on mine. I have always used a Palm based unit but am going to pick up my first HP iPaq tomorrow. The epocrates download is still free, but I think there are more palm apps available out there. I have been a nurse for 8 years and that is my best hint. Good luck!
