Hi Everyone! I attend Wayne County Community College District. I was wondering if anyone new anything about WCCCD's nursing program. Do they have a waiting list? If so, how long is the waiting list. Any info given will be helpful. Thanks!

When I started HFCC's program about 1/3 dropped first semester. Big deal. That's when you find out who is going to make it and who isn't. Nursing school is hard and you have to consider the students before you. I don't blame instructors for being hard on students especially after having to deal with students who cheat/lie to get ahead. They expect a lot from students and rightfully so because you have peoples' lives in your hands. Its the same all over, those who fail their nursing program will complain about it and blame the instructors.

I had to make a comment here. WCCCD, in my opinion is a horrible program for nursing. I WAS in the nursing program. In my group that started in Jan of 2008, 77 out of 120 failed! To me that is a sign that something is wrong with the teaching, not just students. There are instructors that do not teach. They belittle you in class. Saw that first hand. Alot of classes are self-taught, which I cant do. My med/surg instructor told us on one particular test that if we scored higher than a certain percentage then she would assume you cheated, because no one can score that high on her test! What kind of BS is that? Your supposed to go to her after class, on her schedule to discuss your test. You go and your treated horrible. Even in some cases seriously put down. I know we are adults and shouldnt need a hand to hold..but there is this thing called respect..just because we are students does not mean we need to be talked down to like children. On the other hand..there are some instructors that are awsome and i was fortunate enough to have them for foundations. They treat you with respect and pump you full of confidence. They are honest and their teachind style is great. I was one of the 77 that failed. I did the remediation and was supposed to start back up a couple weeks ago. But during the summer I had a lot of time to think about what I was doing and decided that WCCCD is not where I wanted to continue school at with nursing. Remediation was a joke. Just busy work. Yes, nursing school should be hard. Its a lot of responsibility..a persons life is in your hands..ur the door between life and death..as we were told. So it shouldnt be as easy as AP was. You should spend hours of studing regardless of which school you go to. But its almost like you are set up for failure with some of these instructors. I would never tell someone to go to WCCCD for nursing. I would push people to go for their bachelors. If I continued at WCCCD..it would be almost 4 years to get an assoc. degree. I started pre reqs in fall of 06. I went year round to get my pre reqs done. Started nursing in Spring 08. So I could have been done december of 09. Then after failing it was may of 10..with those amount of years I should have done a bachelors program...which is what im looking for now. Live and learn I guess. Good luck to all of you that are sticking it out at WCCCD!

I understand excatly what you are saying, but as somone else said before it's usually the students who didn't make it who complain the most. I have a friend who attended OCC and HFCC and your story sounds similar to their's. My friend that attended OCC said she was step up as well as others for failure, because the teacher would have tests that didn't go with the lecture. My friend from HFCC failed their program 2 twice for the same reasons. I see that it's not just WCCCD that has this problem. We all have to think if we have families and full time jobs than it will take us longer to finish our goals. Don't give up! I also have a friend who has been in WCCCD program since August 2007 and will be done in May 2009 and she has never failed a semester. So sometimes it's the individual.

I started the program at WCCCD in August 07, and I have not failed a class (knock on wood). I have gone through the program with a friend that I made on the first day of Nursing school orientation, and she has not failed either. It just depends. You have to be self motivated.

Seriously, I'm sick of people blaming instructors for having failed their nursing programs. It just seems too easy to put the blame on people who are there to teach you. They are not there to hold your hand all the way through nursing school. Yeah some instructors can be rude and abrasive. I went to HFCC, there were plenty of instructors there that were like that. I've met some professors from WSU who were that way too. You need to be motivated and I think it says a lot about someone's personal accountability when they fail something and blame someone else for it.

ratemyprofessor.com that where a friend told me to go and I have chose all my professors from others' input.

the only reason WCCCD is hard and a lot of people drop out or fail is because its a fast-track program. Every student who has 15 weeks a semester, WCCCD nursing students have 6 weeks to cram 15 weeks of knowledge into. They are very upfront in how hard it is, and what you are expected of.

When I was at HFCC, we had peds, OB and transition in one semester. 5 weeks of each. Yeah it was tough but its no reason to blame the instructors. Fast-track programs are not for everyone.

Does anyone else ever feel like they are in highschool agian???

He said she said. Everyone has a story, I know I do.. But I'm just here to wish everyone luck on whatever path they may take weather it is nursing or to be a weather man:weatherrain6:. No matter what it is, you need to believe in yourself and not always believe what you may hear.... :redpinkhe:nurse::icon_hug::hngon:

You are right about WCCCD.

You are right about WCCCD. There you are set up for failure. The most ridiculous thing is that many people are passing tests around desperately to pass the class. Many teachers there, they put you down and they hope every minute that you fail. Good teachers are the ones who are inspiring the students, not the ones who come to class and run their mouth about their families and how well they did in school. There you are treated like a 4 year old.

Nursing school is not an easy road, but you have to study like crazy and know a lot. You know what they say: Only the strong survive!

I am curious, why you stayed as WCCCD if it is so bad. You said you were in M/S 4, did it just get bad at WCCCD for you? If a situation is so horrible, you should not stay in it. If you don't feel as if you are being trained to be a good nurse, why waste the time in the program. If you feel as if you are being abused by the instructors, why subject yourself to it? If you are "self-teaching", why pay money to go there? WCCCD nursing program is not the only nursing program in Michigan, you have options. I am not trying to be funny, you should not stay in any situation in life that makes you unhappy and bitter.

Some of us have many years in with this school, and at one time, felt the ultimate pride. I have not failed anything, but some of the Instructor's and administration leave a lot to be desired. I would not recommend this school to anyone considering it. Granted, I have learned a great deal, but have become very disillusioned. We would not "go find another school" when we are only weeks away from graduation and have 3 or more years of school under our belts with this school. Too much rides on becoming a "quitter", nope, you suck it up, and grit your teeth, and move forward.

NO matter where you are, what nursing program you are, you have to study. Good luck when you are in the nursing program!
