Hello all,

I have seen all internet address for starting off the long paper work especially the NMC. Are there any easier ways to go about this? I am very confused as to how to go about starting. I am a Canadian trained Rn and I am presently working inthe US.

Would you recommend any companies to work with or any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks and hope this

Unfortunately there isn't an easier way to do this. Best would be to get NMC out of the way especially as there are changes with Non EU foreign trained nurses.

I think the hardest problem at the moment will be with current hospital problems is finding a hospital willing to sponser your work permit although things may have changed after dealing with NMC but I don't think so :(

I have to agree with silverdragon, the hardest part will be finding a hospital to sponsor you, as so many of them are laying off staff, & there are many UK nurses that haven't been able to find work that you will be fighting for jobs with, which can be employed so much easier than a non-uk nurse.

Thank you for all the information... that is terrible to hear when here in Canada and US there is a huge shortage of nurses. Is it just a UK phenomenon? :nurse:

for years there has been a recognised nurse shortage and a few years ago the government did a big drive to try and get people to go to university and become nurses but over last 12 months or so been harder for newly qualified nurses to get jobs even more so in recent months with trusts laying off due to financial difficulties

Is it hard if you have a few years experience in a speciality area. Right now I am workign in the ER and obtaining many certifications??

Just throwing out something else into the middle of things, what type of degree do you have? The two year degrees are not recognized there, it must be at least a three year program.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing it is a4 year university program in Canada. I am hoping that my education will be recongized.

AS the others have said - it's not your qualifications or experience that will be the problem (unless you only did a 2 year degree), it's the fact that:

a) many of us are looking for jobs right now and we are UK born, resident and trained - thousands of us are being threatened with redundancy due to financial diffculties in the NHS

b) you will need to do do the ONP programme - as it says on the Nursing and Midwifery Council website:

All nurses who wish to become registered with the NMC must undertake this programme, and must have undertaken an English language test as part of the application process. From 1 September 2006 the ONP will be the only route to registration. The old supervised practice route will end on this date.

I thank all of you for all the information. It has all been very helpful and useful. I will still try since I am not planning on this for about a year or so.. and maybe things will turn around.

Unfortunately, it will probably get worse over there. Do not see things changing for quite some time.

I agree. I think it will take a big overhaul to sort things out and that may never happen :(
