Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hi I'm new here Ally 25 married and have 4 kids under 6. I want to go to school for nursing. Can anyone give me any tips on what to look for and such? I know I have to finish and get my GED working on it now. Will I need to take my SAT's or Act before getting into a school? I'm hoping to apply for a program here in Maine its 14 weeks $800 and it includes everything. They are night classes and at the end I can take the test and if I pass will be a CNA. I'd love any tips anyone has.

I wouldn't say never, but his problem was that he was not motivated to go because he didn't think he needed it. He doesn't have a learning disability; he's just very lazy about school, always has been...probably always will be. If he decided he wanted to go to college, though, I'd encourage him. I've never been negative around him, he gets enough of that already from his parents.

oh ya let him be for sure he will figure his own way out not every needs to go to higher ed, I am just saying never say never he is only 24 heck at 24 I barely knew how to tie my shoes lol takes a long time to figure things out for some of us, I am 38 now and finally getting it together so you just never know. Oh and everyone called me lazy and unmotivated too sometimes learning dissabilities go unnoticed. Many times when someone is struggling they put up barriers and fake fronts to be percieved as something else because they don't know whats wrong either to me school seemed like it was coming at me in a foreign language but yet everyone else seemed to get it, I felt there was something wrong with me so I pretended to be a trouble maker and that I didn't care and couldn't be bothered.

There's no history of any LD on either side of his family, and he never had trouble in school until he hit high school; I seriously doubt he has a learning disability. He wasn't a troublemaker; he just didn't go to school enough. In Texas if you miss more than a certain number of days in a semester, you automatically flunk the entire semester. That's what happened to him. He didn't want to go back to high school and repeat the semester, so he got his GED instead; but since he's lazy and didn't study, he flunked it the first time. He applied himself and took it again, and passed it. He did not kill himself studying for the test either; it just was not as easy as he assumed it would be.

For some kids, LD makes their lives a living hell until they're diagnosed. But other kids are just lazy. Unfortunately my cousin falls into the latter category. :saint:

Good that you are not negative around him, I just read in our paper today that a 16 year old Eagle Scout shot himself in the school hallway because his grades were bad and his parents wanted to take his car away from him......I guess we need to be happy that they don't do drugs or drop babies in front of our door step or otherwise do stuff to land them in jail huh? He'll go to college when he needs to feed his own family :D

He's never really been a troublemaker, he just has some 'failure to launch' problems. He's 24 and has never lived away from home; I guess that isn't such a horrible thing but the rest of us moved out at 18 when we went to college. I would never rub his face in that, though; he made his decisions and they were the wrong ones but there's no point in bringing that up now since it would just make him feel bad and I don't want to do that to him. Lord knows there are LOTS of things I'd do differently if I had the chance, so I feel like I shouldn't judge him too much.

When we get back to TX I'm going to spend some time with him and try to gently encourage him to continue with his education. He CAN do it, he just needs to apply himself. :yelclap:

"Failure to launch" sounds like my 8 year old, he is also not a trouble maker but doesn't get in gear. My oldest was never a trouble maker either.

Sometimes it's just their personality and there isn't a hole lot anybody can do.

Gosh, I wished I had had better opportunities when I grew up, too.

I refrain from beaten my kids over the head with stuff like : "When I was a kid I had to walk miles and miles to the train station in 10 feet of snow to get to school!" etc ( I actually had to do exactly that) :lol2:

Kids are a little spoiled these days I think. Keep encouraging, that's all we can really do...and of course be an example by persuing education ourselves.

I am taking a GED class in Ma at my local library that offers one on one tutoring. I took the GED test last month and passed 4 out of the 5 test. I am taking classes to help me re-take the math. These test are not easy at all. You have to study to pass them with out a doubt. I have been working on getting my GED for about a year now. I go to class 1-2 days a week for two hrs and I do about 6 hrs a week of homework. I used Contemporary's Top 50 math skills for the GED success by Robert Mitchell and Dolores Emery and two books from Steck-Vaughn (makers of the Ma GED test in Ma) GED Math along with the standard GED calculator the casio fx-260. These books give simple and easy to use instructions, examples, questions and answers and practice test with answers. It is very helpful to know how to sure the calculator before hand. I got them though the library for about 12$ each. You can probably find these books/calculator on Ebay or a book store. I also got the GED for dummies it was helpful but these other books are better. It is good to see other people talking about getting their GED.I would recommend taking a pre-GED class in your area too.It made the difference for me . It makes me feel like am not alone. Good luck!!

GED test centers by state they may also offer pre-GED classes or point you to somewhere that does

Don't know where you are in Maine, but you might consider finding out whether your local hospital will pay for your CNA training. I believe Maine Med and at least one of the Lewiston hospitals pays for the training and hires you when finished -- a great way to save $800.

You might also find out if you automatically qualify for the CNA registry after completing two semesters of whatever nursing school you plan to attend. That's another way to kill two birds with one stone. USM offers this and will pair you with a local employer to boot so that you can work your way through. No need to double the training.

Good luck!
