If you are looking for an exciting carrer with good money and excellent benefits, look into Correctional nursing in the Department of Corrections in Oregon. Oregon is currently hiring for a new prison in Umatilla and another is being built in the Salem area that will be opening the end of this year and the beginning of next year. There are never census days in this job and you will always have a job. Oregon was one of the first state to have all their prisons accredited by the NCCHC. It is and exciting place to work and in the next 10 years there will be 3 or 4 more prisons built here. So join a growing number of nurses in the Oregon correctional health care field. psychonurse:D

Dear Psycho: I am in corrections in Georgia; have been there for 6 years. Do you mind telling what the going rates are for RNs and LPNs? I'm having trouble hiring LPNs, ......haven't convinced the City Managers that they're WAY underpaid.

I am at the top of the pay scale for RNs and we take home $2,660.00 after Oregon taxes and union dues and etc. The LPNs make less of course and we have a 7 step raises for the amount of time that you work. The RNs start out at about $1,800 for starting after taxes. We aslo have a great retirement with the state and after 5 years you are vested in the pay.

Wow, I am green with envy at the pay rates! I work as a casual nurse at a prison in New Zealand. Is that pay rate per fortnight =(2 weeks)?

I just left the Oregon DOC, but not as an RN. I left to BECOME an RN. I told 'em I'd be back once I had my degree, but I'm not so sure about that (to be honest). With shift diff and on-call pay you can make more if you work elsewhere.

However, one of my fave nurses told me just before I left that it is FLAT OUT the EASIEST job she's ever had, being an RN in corrections. She's still bouncy and enthusiastic after many years of service, and it's obvious she loves her job. The benefits and retirement are nigh unto impossible to beat.

I know I am sort of contradicting myself by saying how 'great' it is and yet not being excited about going back... but I'm very much enjoying being away from corrections after almost 5 years, right now. In another few years I may change my mind, but I'd like to get some ER and other experience under my belt before I resort to 'the old reliable' state employment.

Just my two cents. Your mileage may vary. :)
