I just graduated this spring (May 2014) and passed my boards. I'm wanting to apply for my RN to BSN program and know that everyone seems to use OU for this because of the cost.
I am so lost and find their website to be the worse. (I couldn't even find the RN to BSN program until doing a search).
Where do you find the cost per credit hour? (Or for the program).
I hear of people applying and not starting until next year. So you can apply, be accepted and decide "when" you want to start and they'll just "hold" your admission?
How do I know what classes I have already taken with my RN program will transfer? I have read a lot of people talking about stats (which I took a stats class that was a requirement for admission into our nursing program...is this the same or will I have to take another?). I see people mention foreign language, music, history and so on...I guess I'm a little confused as to why these need to be taken and what it has to do with your BSN and nursing? The thought of putting out all this extra money for pre-reqs just make me cringe. (I took several classes for my pre-reqs to the nursing program that when they switched from quarters to semesters, they no longer required those classes and it was such a waste of money!!!).
For classes needed (like Nutrition), am I able to take this class at my community college instead and just have the credits transferred?
The website mentions you have to buy their health insurance??? Really? (For any students that are enrolled at least half time) Would this program be considered at least half time?
I was reading a thread on here that was started in 2011, but nothing has been updated since last year so I didn't find it too helpful.
Are the classes still 5 weeks?
I have to admit that I know nothing about this program except for what people have mentioned to me (that I work with) here and there and everyone (the nurses in the program) says that all this program is is writing paper after paper. They tell you to do readings in the book, but the only work you do is writing APA papers. Is this true?
I was reading (on here) that you have to send $100 with your application? If you don't start there, do they keep it? (I assume). Also that it takes a long time before you hear anything.
Transcripts-do we request them from the school and have them sent or can I send my own (since I did receive mine after graduation).
Someone help me understand how to get started. My head is spinning.

Hmm if you google "ohio university bachelor completion rn to bsn cost" or search the RN to BSN program at Ohio u, you should be able to find this information. The cost is 240$ for in state residents. You must select a start date when you apply. But you could always choose a later date. Once you apply and send your transcripts they will review them and give you a report on the credits you need, the other classes are taken for a BSN, they will be required for any bachelors degree. Some classes can be taken at your local school and transferred to OU but it would have to be approved first. I do not see where it says you are required to buy their insurance? My understanding is that you are required to have insurance, if you have none then they have an option to purchase from them. Nursing classes are still 5 weeks. They will keep your application money, the fee was 25$ but consider the cost of sending your previous transcripts. The transcripts must be Official and sent by the school and not by you.

I just graduated from OU's online BSN program. I paid $243/credit hour out of state. Nursing classes were 5 weeks. I never had to have insurance when I attended. I took many electives at other online colleges but they must be approved by OU before you take them. OU gave me credit for all my ADN credits, some over 30 years old. They only accept student's from certain states now.
Yes MANY APA papers. Most of the nursing classes are writing papers and most of the grading is on APA. A couple of the classes had tests, but not many. I think I paid $25 for sending in an application, I don't recall. Hope this helps!
So since the both of you mentioned that the other classes that I need (like Nutrition and Sociology) can be taken at another community college, BUT have to be approved by them...I guess I'm wondering why? Most of the students that were in my nursing program took these classes during their ADN program (I just didn't get a chance to) so what makes theirs different? Do I have to have their approval if I take these classes BEFORE I apply for OU? I was thinking about signing up for the Nutrition class for January and the Sociology for Summer semester. Then maybe that's when I should apply to OU? (I assume you have to have both of these classes completed before starting the actual BSN program correct?)
Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.
I have read that the first and last class have to be taken alone. Does that mean that the other classes can be taken together? I'm trying to understand why so many people say this. Would you even want to bunch classes together? Or are they talking about something else all together?

I would get approval before taking the classes since you don't want to waste the money. All my credits transferred since it was a partner school but initially they messed up my nutrition since it was a 2 hour class instead of the 3 but because they posted they would transfer it in as a 3 hour class, they took it.
That is not true. The first class does not have to be taken alone. I took mine at the same time as the physical assessment but if I did it over, I would have taken it alone since it was a pain with all the essays.
The last class I am taking at the same time as another class because that's the only time it is scheduled. You have to have all your other classes scheduled to take the last class but not completed. They are all co-reqs and not pre-reqs. Some people mix those up.

You need to get a degree audit done so you can determine what prior classes will transfer for credit. That can't be done until you send all your official transcripts to OU. I think the in state/out of state tuition is the same, but your rate also depends on whether your employer is part of the Academic Outreach Initiative. There's a list of current participants on the website.

I would suggest you read that handy link before proceeding. Some of the things you have read are simply untrue. 4510 is your first nursing class, which can be taken with whatever you want. 4600 must be taken within your last semester. Stats is a prereq for 4550. I might be remembering wrong, but I believe your previous stats class must be 4 semester hours to qualify. Other than that, you can take classes in whatever order you'd like. You're probably reading about taking classes separately because the 5 week format can be overwhelming initially.
Good luck! I have a week left. It was annoying, but worth the hassle.
"No" you do not have to have nutrition or sociology completed before you start the BSN program. My sociology transferred transferred in from my ADN program and I took nutrition in the BSN program but not at OU. I was pleasantly surprised at how many credits they did accept. I took 4510 alone as I had no clue what APA was and it took some adjustment on my part. I am an old fart compared to some of the other students
My states was a three hour class but it was from a partner school so guaranteed to transfer over.
I live in Ohio and went to a community college that is partnered up with OU. So, I know my credits transfer and I know that the 2 classes I have to take still (Nutrition and Soc.) will also transfer. A lot of the students from my graduating class have 1) already applied and their same classes I have transferred and 2) the two classes I need to take that they already took transferred as well and 3) some are starting classes already. So that's not an issue.
woodsyny-thanks for all the info and advice (and others as well). Good to know that I don't have to have those 2 classes completed before starting OU. I do know what APA is and we had to do a lot of APA papers in our nursing program...but I'm an "old fart" as well. I honestly don't mind writing papers and usually do pretty well with them scoring fairly high on all my previous papers. That's why I figured why not get on with the BSN program if that's mostly what it involves. :)
Here's what I did:
I applied in December the night of graduation. I was accepted in January. I could have started earlier but opted to wait till March. I took the 4510 and 4520 together. Then I did 4560 along with a class at Miami University for writing. Then I did 4540 and 4580. I just completed 4570. I will be taking 4530 this next 5 weeks. Then 4600 and 4550. I don't want to do the last two together but that is the way it worked out.
I also work full-time.

Do you I have to wait for DARS report before enrolling a nursing class?
