waitlists..

Hi all,

as you know i'm moving to AZ very soon. My best friend is coming with me and he is interested in a nursing program, any kind really. I know some of the waitlists for schools around here are ridiculous and I was wondering if there were any schools in the phoenix area that dont have a waitlist?? Thanks!

what pre reqs do you need?

the prereqs required are english 101 (and 102 i think?), math (i took above college algebra, but i think something below that is okay), chemistry (just one semester of high school chemistry), medical terminology (but if you have had it, you can test out of it or they'll take your credits usually).

i know the school offers the prereqs on campus. also, they offer anatomy and phys 1 and 2 there, during the first two blocks, as well as chemistry (college level is first block). they also offer psych and nutrition, as well as nursing assisting. it's a good program. 5 fifteen week blocks, clinicals at mayo and county (as well as other good hospitals). i'm in my 4th out of 5 and i can't wait to get this all over and done. it's spendy but worth it.

Did you friend ever decide on moving? If not I've got a few more suggestions for you.

Go to the AZ BON website (I think it's www.azbn.gov). Click on "Educational Resources" and it'll pull up a list of pdf files. Read through some of those.

In one, it named a few schools -- generally those in more rural areas -- which actually had UNDERCAPACITY in their clinicals (data from 2004 school year). Be careful when reading that though because it listed MCCCD as one who had undercapacity. That's a bit misleading because yeah, they probably did have some undercapacity but I'd bet it was in a program not open to the public (hospital employee programs and the like).

One of those schools was the one I'm now aiming for -- Central Arizona College. It's nursing program is handled out of Coolidge, but there is a branch in Apache Junction from which one can take most prereqs and coreqs. In addition, I know that they use Banner Baywood in East Mesa for some of their clinicals. So if your friend is willing to drive some a few days a week to Coolidge for classes and into the valley for clinicals......it's an option.

Another article on the site talks about the additional funding given by the governor to increase the number of clinical spots available at several schools. Right now, if I'm reading it right which I'm not sure I am, it seems like MCCCD is at a 2-3 semester wait.
