Those nurses that are currently working somewhere within the 5 boroughs and Long Island do you find that what you make balances with the high cost of living in your area? Are you able to own a home and take care of your family with the wages your are bringing home? I am asking because I am a single mother of two looking to move back home to NYC within the next 2 years. I had to relocate to the southeast to help take care of a family member a few years ago and since her passing I have been ready to leave and return back to my "roots". I have a family member in NY that is an RN and I assume she is making pretty decent wages. She had bought a home and was driving a mercedes by the time she was 25 (she's 27 now). But she has no children and doesn't want any, so her money is hers to play with. Any opinions on the matter would greatly be appreciated. I don't want to move home and end up struggling, but I do know that I want to leave where I'm at.

I live in one of the 5 boroughs.Brooklyn!
The base sallary at the hospital i am working is $60,568, $1,000 for each year of experience up to 30yrs, $1,500 for BSN, and $2,600 for certification.
Per diem jobs are $42-$45/hr.
The money is here but you have to work for it!
I cannot speak for the other boroughs but i can for Brooklyn.
The average 1 fam 3 bed home in Brooklyn will cost you 350-450 k ( high possibility-attached and on a 20x100 lot, if you are lucky 30x100:) ) This does not guarantee a good neighborhood or school district. the public schools here are awful, which might mean private school for your children. The other boroughs are not far behind with price. For that money you might think the house is in immaculate condition:rotfl: You might have to do some work.
The prices of homes in NYC has doubled in the last 3 years.
You can do the math and tell me if you think you can afford NYC.
If i had children i am not sure i would want to live in NYC. It is a wonderful place to visit and live if you are single and free, but i don't know about raising a family here on an RN sallary. The quality of life is not the greatest. I have seen what you could get in NC for 350-450K. I would be living like a queeen there ( Of couse with the money i saved from working in NYC).
The realestate market is extremely inflated here maybe prices will go down by the time you come back.
Apartments by the way 1B $900-1500 2B $1100-2000 $3B 1300-3500
Is returning to your roots so important? If so come and join me in the rat race.:)
How about Atlanta?
Your cousin seem to be doing well for herself. I wonder what the car insurance is for her Mercedes( that is if she has it insured in NYC), because insurance is so expensive here. Does she have to work a second job?How much (%) of her income goes toward her morgage? You should ask her these questions.
You don't want to leave NC to come here and live check to check.
Most single RNs at my job that own a home have to work a second job to pay there morgage and live comfortably. The others are married and have there husbands to help.
Yes the homes here in NC are less expensive but the wages are a LOT lower and do not balance out. We are taxed on everything from food to cars to homes to garbage collection. When I first came here the cost of living was pretty low. That is now a thing of the past. Experienced RN's are making $18 an hour here and believe me the school system here is not better. I currently have my children enrolled in private school because of this. I HATE IT HERE! Yes, moving back to NY may not be the best choice but I do know where I DON'T want to go (anywhere in the south). It's hard to explain to someone how much you loathed something and that's how I feel about where I'm at. Everyone has their likes and dislikes and the south is not for me. I don't know....................I'm trying to hold out here for two more years and then we will make a move somewhere.....................Thanks for all the good advice though.
I am sorry to hear you are not happy there. Where are you living in NC?

I've heard that NC doesn't have the best schools. It's funny though, most people leave NY and go south.
I think I replied to you once before. I live in Queens. Houses are absolutley outrageous here (Your cousin must be really good with her $$). They cost a little less on LI, but the taxes are much higher. On 2 salaries, we are not doing that well, and I work per-diem, averaging $40/hr (but I work a full time week usually). We are not unhapppy, but I don't think we'll ever get ahead. Our rent is high. We like where we live, have 2 parking spots, and are pretty close to our jobs. We chose private school (but are in a really good district). Gas prices are outrageous, and the train fares are always going up (we don't use them).
It is a decent salary, or so I thought. The good news is there is plenty of work (and overtime) available.
You are so right about the schools here. I have my little one in private school which is the complete opposite of the public school system here (IT'S EXCELLENT!) He is in Kindergarten and has been writing in cursive since Pre-K. I'm at a crossroads I want to leave her for sure but don't know if taking my little one back to NY is the best thing. I've looked in to several areas. Texas has a low cost of living but is hot as can be. I have been to Atlanta to visit a relative that moved there from NY but it is SOOOOOOO over crowded it's ridiculous. Maryland (the part that is closer to Delaware) has decent wages and reasonable home prices but there school system in MD I've heard isn't so great also. My plan is to be moving from NC by 2006 so I had better hurry up and figure out where I'm going it will be here before I know it.

szccdw, I feel as you do, but I'm even further south living in Florida. It is amazing how people will comment that the cost of living is so much less in FL than up north but that is no longer true. Homes in my area (Bradenton-Sarasota area) have risen dramatically and in order to get a nice home in a good school district, houses are starting at $250,000. Food is much more expensive down here than in NY and the schools aren't that great (at least compared to the Long Island schools). Starting wages for nurses are $18 per hour.
Although I have put in an application for the ADN school down here, I am also applying to Long Island University in Brooklyn for the BSN program. If I get the go ahead from LIU, I think that I will be returning to NY.
