Volunteer Nurse

Published

Hi! I passed the NLE, NCLEX and IELTS,done with some the trainings (IVT,BLS,1st aid etc) submitted my resumes to hospitals and right now I am still UNEMPLOYED!:yeah: I am also a full time volunteer nurse in one the hospitals in Manila(mon-fri 6am- 2pm) and yes, I also paid just to get in to this hospital as a volunteer. I do not regret what I am doing right now, even if I know that it will not count as a work experience in my resume and even if sometimes I feel a little bad about some of the regular staff nurses who do nothing but pretend to be busy and take advantage of the volunteer nurses, I dont regret it because I am learning a lot, not just the nursing skills, nurse patient relationship but also learning more about myself; the kind of nurse I want to be... compasionate and competent.

A few days ago, I started a mini mission to help the poor patients In our ward, I am asking my friends to donate stuffs like gloves, cottonballs, masks, gauzes, digital thermometers (the hospital I am in is still using the mercury type), alcohols, liquid soaps, insytes, injections, even sterile water for injections etc. Wish me luck guys and I do hope that my mission will be a successful one. By the way if anyone here is from alabang, sucat, laspinas area and wants help in my mission just send me a pm.

Can you pm me the name of the hospital, too? Thanks.

to my fellow unemployed nurses.... you may go to UP-PGH Ugnayang Pahinungod and inquire for their ER dept volunteer program... a very excellent experience... you will witness all kinds of cases
hi! do they still accept volunteers until now? i am interested. do i have to go there to inquire? thanks! =)

I'm in the same situation as you are. My uncle can refer me to a hospital in Laguna as a volunteer but it would be better if I can do volunteer work in Manila or Makati.

Please help us, guys. Thanks a lot.

I'm very well pleased by what you are doing in extending your help to patients. You might think it's just a mini mission for you but it's really something big to the patients. You are really doing a good job. When we are in a difficult situation we remember what nursing is really all about. It's not always about having a good salary but it is about the patient we are caring for and how we can make a difference in their life by giving the best care we can given. Keep it up and hope that you working abroad as a nurse your view will not change and you'll uphold the standard of excellence for all of us Filipino nurses...

It's really hard to find jobs these days... I couldn't even get a volunteer job in my area!:crying2: Can you imagine a hospital no longer accepting volunteer nurses because volunteer jobs were already full until next year? If I get the job, then I will have to start volunteering next year... You should see their room loaded with applications:eek:

guys, try to pass your CV in PCMC

doing volunteer jobs is GOOD as long as you DON'T pay for it

enhancing your skills will improve your confidence and its a MORAL booster

The trend nowadays for nursing graduates are geared towards becoming a volunteer or trainee in the hospital. This is a downright lame excuse for hospitals not to hire regular staff (since they would acquire the manpower WITHOUT the extra charge of allowance and benefits), especially for those private hospitals who even make money training nurses. I am against these big private hospitals who charge nurses for training and the nurse still ends up not getting hired. My advise for my fellow nurses is to always weigh your options. I was once a volunteer in the ER of PGH (this is the ERVP of UP-Pahinungod) and now I am a regular staff in the same hospital (take note, the volunteer program is NOT a stepping stone for my employment in the said hospital), they did not charge me for the volunteer work that I have rendered. BTW, UP-Pahinungod accepts volunteers who are from different backgrounds (nursing or non-nursing students, graduates, professionals), so this means that this not a volunteer nursing program. That is why it is called volunteer work, you are not paid and you should not pay for the job! We shouldn't tolerate this kind of abuse from employers.

My heart goes out to those nurses who are unemployed and result in patronizing these trainings (or becoming a volunteer). I know that this is hard for all of you. That's why for those who are still about to take up nursing just for the sake of cumbering lots of money and becoming rich (which should not be the mind set), think twice because the table has already turned, the EMPLOYERS are becoming rich at the expense of the nurses.

@gambutrol

Hi where can i ask for office of UP-Pahinungod, Im 2007 graduate until now i dont have a work pa...Im done with my dialysis training pero until now. havent find a job. So im thinking of doing a volunteer work. I think your suggestion of applying at the ER-PGH is good idea. Where is there office? ill be very willing to vounteer. How long would be the volunteer?

Infection control for most clinics means that you put up a curtain or spray alcohol.

If you're shocked at this practice then you should also know that some hospitals wash gloves for re-use by doctors.

Yes.. latex gloves used in surgery and covered in blood are washed in extremely hot water, then sanitized, re-powdered and packaged to be used again.

Yippee..

I hope I never have to be admitted for surgery while I'm living here.

"hahahaha as for the hospital where i voluntered, sponges are washed and sterilized then reused for other operation, other patient and yet there are microbes that cannot be killed by merely sterilization...more over syringes are reused.... i mean if we have 10 patient recieving omepra, we gona use one syringe with 10 neeldes...isn't that great....hahaha...in addition if our patient has an order of of pen G q 6hrs...you have to use 1 needle & syringe in 24 hours...

...ah what a pity and pathetic environment...

hi gambutrol, I'd like to ask if the ER volunteer program is still available?:specs:

You response would be deeply appreciated, thanks!

The only way to stop these paid volunteer programs is to get the word out for nurses to STOP doing it altogether. Just STOP. Then slowly stop volunteering. The fact that a hospital will charge a patient for your services and then not pay you for them should disgust all Pinoy nurses.

If you stop feeding into a system then the system will die, the hospitals will have to start doing the right thing and paying you for services.

In the meantime, anyone who qualifies should sign up for the N.A.R.S. program since it is paid employment for 6 month or 12 month terms.
