What has happened to common sense in the hospital? I had a patient who had a hysterectomy (TAH and BSO) Tuesday morning. This young lady was only back her room for about 20 minutes when she had about 10 visitors come! :( She had just fallen asleep when these people showed up! So, of course they wake her up. And they proceed to visit with her like they had just set down in her home with coffee for a long visit. The longer they stayed, the more uptight and tense the patient became. Hence, the worse her pain became. I finally had enough, and asked everyone to leave except her S/O. I just can't believe that some people would be so inconsiderate! A nurse I work with had the same problem on Friday. An elderly lady had a colon resection and within minutes of her returning to the room, several people had gathered to visit.
I hate sounding like a hag, but some of these people just don't get it. I just love it also when people barge into the room, when the door is SHUT and the curtain is pulled. They just walk in like it is their own home.
That really pops my gasket. :angryfire I just want to scream "Hey, how would you like me to walk in on you when you have your naked backside exposed to the world?" Anyone else feel the same way about inconsiderate visitors? Maybe I just seem to be the magnet the past few weeks for them.
My favorite visitor was the granddaughter of one of our mrsa pts. She would come up to visit with her two y/o. One morning she asks if I will go and get some diapers for her son. I tell that we do not have them available for him. She says yes you do he was a pt her last month and hospital supplied them ( I work on a combined medical adult/peds floor) I explained that all of our stock comes from a pyxis system and has to be charged to somebody. She tells me just to charge it to grandpa. My reply was that I had strong feeling his insurance would not cover pampers. Also that I have a child the same age as your son and when I leave with him I always take a diaper bag with me. Well that pissed her off and she stormed off saying that she would go to Dr so and so's office he will give me one. They are nice over there (ped's Dr on hospital camppus)
I work in aged care and I would love to have the problem of having too many visitors. The residents I look after often have no family left except their chilren who are often too busy or too far away to visit their reles. I often spend time after hours just sitting and chatting with these lonely people who, after all, built the foundations of the society we live in. They fought in wars to keep us safe, they burned their bras to gives us our pay checks. They deserve our very best. And a visitor or twenty wouldn't go astray either;)
Oh man can I relate as a pt. I had my second baby, and frankly, all I wanted was 3 hots and a cot. Do not come to see me, just let me sleep, b/c I am going home to a 19 mo old and will have an infant, and I will have precious little time for sleep!
My friend and his new wife called, wanted to come see me. I said, how nice of you really, but don't go out of your way, you can see us when we come home. My hair was greasy, I looked like shit, was bleeding like a pig, and just wanted to see my hubby, and the grandparents were OK, they know how to limit a visit. But anyone else NO!! Well, I went on and on, they absolutely refused to take no for an answer. An hour later they came to the hospital. I was so pi$$ed I couldn't see straight. I pretended to fall asleep, but they stayed on and on bothering my husband.
Then, with my first, I had the damn janitors barge righ in while I was trying to nurse, totally exposed, and post-C-section, I still had an IV and was on pit, it wasn't like I could pull my own curtain.
I have NO PROBLEM kicking visitors out. I say very nicely, so and so is very tired right now, please come back when he/she can appreciate your visit more.
